Interesting that you run the games for 24 hours.
It's common knowledge in North America that the PSX hardware can begin
to overheat anytime after about two hours. The manual warns you that
for "your health", you should take a break about that often, and I
often cynically wondered if that was there to avoid users overheating
the machine.
The AI in both Gran Turismos is clearly too weak to work with realistic
damage. I mean, you could probably hang around in sixth place and
just wait for the AI cars to damage themselves out of contention.
That's why damage is an option for 2 player mode only in GT2. Yes,
it's a bad simulator in that respect.
With console games, I'm sure part of the theory is to make the game
"exhaustible" so you have to buy something new. Both GT's actually
don't fit that entirely, but that may not be considered a good thing
by Sony, and some aspects of the games do fit the "throw away when
finished" pattern.
Nevertheless, in GT2, people say there is some sort of "Event
Synthesizer" opened up when you get your "Super License" (which you
don't even know exists until you've got your other five licenses).
People say "Super License", even though it's one lap time trials, is
not as difficult as the IA license was in GT1. I've not bothered
trying it yet. There's enough other stuff to do.
