GPL: .50 Bumps??

by Baron967 » Fri, 12 Feb 1999 04:00:00

I realize the .50 bump stops are illegal in GPL.  But a while ago I downloaded
a couple setups that had the .50 bumps.   Just recently I tried my current
setups to run the .50 bumps stops...  WOW!  What a huge difference.  I sawed
1.5 seconds of my Mosport time with the Eagle.  I am actually very dissapointed
by this... Should the bump stops be making that large of a difference?
Especially since I did not adjust my ride height from what I had been using.
I am aware of the low ride specials that some have been driving but I never
wanted to try them.    But with the .50 bumps stops I went from racing with the
BRM's at Mosport to qualifying on the pole and dueling with Clark and Hill.

I noticed last night that 3 of the 4 bump stop heights for the *default*
Ferrari setup for Watkins Glen were 0.5 inches. Interestingly, the menu, as
you said, doesn't allow adjustment below 1 inch.

I'm not convinced reducing the bumps tops by 0.5 would contribute 1.5 secs
at Mosport.

I find setting up quite difficult as practicing the track pays so much
dividends - especially when returning to one track after a break. Its
possible to think the setup changes are the reason for dramatic improvements
(such as 1.5 secs) only to find reverting to your old setup yields the same
results. I need to do quite a few laps (a lot!) to get consistent before
setup changes can be judged.

Go back to 1.0 bumps stops & recheck your times (I could be wrong of
course!)

Cheers!

Tony... I agree 100%. I've had .5-inch and 1-inch stops and it makes NO
differnce at all. Bottom line, if your suspension is soft enough to
allow you onto the stops, you will get BAD results. If the extra .5
makes a difference, then raise your ride height until it doesn't, or
firm up your springs with the 1-inch stops.

I'll give it a try and stiffen my suspension with the 1.0  bump stops.  I
believe I was running with 75 F springs and 90 R springs..    Or I will raise
the ride height a tad..  I'll let you guys know..  I have to get to work now
but I will try it tonite!   Thanks.. All this leads me to believe am running
poor setups.
