Right now, the P3-550 to 600's are a good deal. You could buy more, but the
prices really jump after the 600's. (Give it a month and everything will
drop a couple more $ though).
I just picked up a Intell-Coppermine 600 myself. A new Asus motherboard,
128meg of RAM (133 bus speed) and a Voodoo3-3000. Got them all for about
$600 from an www.adacom.com .
After installing it all, I overclocked the CPU to 842mhz. The V3 card runs
at 166mhz, but it too can be OC'd.
Some examples:
GP2 - I can finally, just finally run it full gprahics with no slowdown
GPL - 1024X768, full everything (including in mirrors) 30+ fps, lowest it
goes is 27 at the start
GPL - 1280X1024, full everything 25+fps. lowest is 19 at start.
N3 - Noth an issue, 6 draw ahead, all cars showing front and rear, full
detail.
Midtown Madness - smooth as silk at 1280
So far everything else that I have played, I have at 1024X768 or above and
havent seen any slowdowns. (Unreal, Q3, Rainbow 6, Soldier of Fortune, Rally
Masters, F/18, etc)
All in all, this was some of the best $600 I have ever spent on my computer.
I made sure to talk to a friend that knows a lot about hardware before I
made the purchases. It is a lot like building a motor, you got to find the
right parts that match up best.... I feel I did.
