If you're interested in running in a fun (but no-bullshit) online Nascar
league, check out NASROC.  At this time, we're going to be running a
single division using Nascar Racing 3.

The web page is under construction, but the rules and schedule are in
place.

I'll be accepting driver applications approximately two weeks AFTER
Nascar racing 3 is released.

Keep in mind that EVERYTHING on the sim is subject to change based on the
actual release date of the sim and its performance in a real-world
environment.

The NASROC server will be available for practice races in order that
prospective drivers can establish their ability to connect reasonably
well.

My Racing League History
  1995 IGN Season 2 (offline league - NR1)
  1996 IGN Season 3 (offline league - NR1)
  1998 IGNRS (online league on TEN - NR2 - finished 2nd
              before dropped races applied)
1998/99 IGPS Season 1 (online league - GPL - finished
              2nd - league admin)
1999 IGPS Season 2  (online league - GPL - finished
              1st - league admin)

Check out the web pages shown in the sig. If you're interested in what
kind of league admin I am, check out the IGPS Season 2 URL (shown in the
sig below).

If you think you might be interested in participating in NASROC, check
out the NSASROC URL in the sig below. Remember, nothing there is cast in
stone at this point.  Remember, I'm NOT accepting driver applications yet
- this is just an announcement of intent to start a league.

I hope somebody is trying to convince Allison Hine and her brother to try to
come up with a VROC-like setup for N3 -- THAT's the way to get people to
race online.  Maybe not the best for leagues, but a VROC setup gives the
newbies an opportunity to get familiar with on-line procedure, etiquette,
etc., and I think it makes a given game more accessible.  I've NEVER played
N2 on TEN, but I've played GPL plenty on VROC, for example.

Just my $0.02.

I agree - a VROC/Spyboy thing is great for people that want to race
without the rules/encumberences (sp?) of a league (or that are just
learning how to drive), but I'm not particularly interested in pickup
races (been there, done that on TEN).

Being in a league is really the only way to go if you want dedicated and
disciplined competition, and if you are tired of the lap-1 wreck-fest
that we have ALL experienced in one form or another.

Just my $.02...

Sounds very interesting John, but some of the rules are quite...
surprising. Like the point system: I don't understand why you use this
point system (i.e first place gets 250), plus all those bonus/penalty
points (5/10 bonus points for safe driving? Seems it would be hard to
give points for that unless you intend on watching every replays).
Promising but not quite what I'm looking for.

Well, some folks complain that Nascar's point system is lacking, hence
the increased earned point value.

Second, after participating anr running in several leagues, I noticed a
drop off in interest by as much as 60% of the roster, especially after
they started missing more than one or two races.  To keep everyone's
interest, you earn token points for a no-show.  It keeps you in the hunt
further into the season.

Lastly, since I'm not awarding $10,000 for half-way leader bonus, I
thought bonus points would be a decenbt substitue.  We're just a bunch o'
rednecks that race online.  We're here to have fun.  Fun is earning
points (in this case).  Unless you***up really bad, you'll always
come away with more than 100 points.

I realize it "ain't exactly Nascar", but I think my points system was
proven in the last IGPS season, and everyone had a shitload of fun.  What
more can I ask as a league admin?

And for the record, I do in fact watch every replay.  Ask the IGPS
(GPL league) drivers, or check out the IGPS "News" page and get a look at
all the penalty and bonus points handed out.  I watch EVERY replay from
start to finish probably 15-20 times each, and small parts of them
countless times when I'm trying to get a feel for what happened.

LOL

Comedy aside (and *that* was funny), I'm not known for doing anything
halfway.  I take my job as league admin quite seriously, and I think
everybody in IGPS appreciated it, so I thought I'd try my hand at a
Nascar league. :-)

N2 on TEN was very poorly advertised and it took a ridicously long time to
get a demo version available. If on installing N2 users had got a "click
here to try the free TEN demo" link automatically installed I rather
suspect that many more would have given it a try. As it was though, the
software was included on the CD but it then took nearly a year to get N2
actually onto TEN. And then they had to create a chargeable account with
TEN before they could even try the thing. Hardly surprising that it never
achieved the necessary number of subscribers - what is surprising, perhaps,
is that even with these hurdles, N2 on TEN has attracted more online racers
than any other form of online racing.

If N3 does include in-box matching server support then it will actually be
a distinct improvement on GPL as it won't be necessary to search out the
details about VROC & GSB. I would bet that at least 75% of GPL's purchasers
don't know that there is a matching service available :(

Cheers,
Richard

Prior to the release of THE PATCH (GPL 1.1) and the accompanying
upgrades to VROC, a beta VROC2 page was available for a short time
which listed N3 hosting services.  Yeah, HTML is cheap, but at least
they've been thinking about it...  ;)

John,

Great idea. And if Alison and Nate would tie it into VROC,we could all
race at one site.
