Cable modem arrived today. All safely installed, but for some reason, my
system doesn't like something. I'm still only downloading at 7Kb/s, but when
we plugged the same modem into the tech guy's laptop, he was getting 40. So,
something in my system isn't right. I used end it all, still no improvement.
I ran Fix-It to see what was running, and here's what I got:

2 Currently Running DOS Programs

KRNL386
VMM32
4 Currently Running 16-bit Tasks

KERNEL32
MMTASK
MSGSRV32
MXTHK16

32-bit Processes

12 Currently Running Processes

DDHELP
EXPLORER
FIX-IT
KERNEL32
mmtask
MPREXE
MSGSRV32
MXTHK16
PSTORES
SPOOL32
SYSTRAY
WMIEXE

I'm running Win ME, no IRQ conflicts, nothing showing up in system manager
as being wrong. Any idea where I should start to look?

Thanks...

Even curiouser, to me at least, is that my pings are excellent. I went to
the N4 lobbies, where my previous best conn was 167, and I'm pinging at 28
or 35 to the local ones! That's unbelievable! But, the slow connection
remains. I tried the test on znet, and it's reporting between 7.0 and 7.6
kb/s. Does that give anyone any clues?

Colin,

The first place to look is www.dslreports.com and
go to the tools then tweaks section. Following the
tweaking advice really helped my dsl line.

I had similar problems for months. Techs came to my house several times. The
last time 3 guys over the course of 7 hours worked on my problem.

They found problems with my physical connection, and problems with the cable
throughout my neighborhood and fixed them all.

I went from 5-7/Kbs to 50/Kbs with all that work. At that point the tech
could get 400/Kbs on his laptop. Odd thing was that my UPLOAD speed was over
what the cable company theoretically capped at. Only downloads were
effected.

You don't mention your hardware setup. You wouldn't, by any chance, have an
SB Live! sound card, would you?

What brand Ethernet card is in your system?   Do you have the latest drivers
for it?  What protocols do you have installed on it?

BTW - DSL reports test is interesting, however it's no indication of the
speed on your ISP just the speed to get to DSL reports.

I had a *very* similar problem some time ago, only in my case it was
between two machines on a local network. The problem was on the windows
machine with a registry entry by the name of "DefaultRcvWindow". It was
set to 2144 where it should have been (the default of) 8192. It caused
transfer speeds of 7 kByte/sec over a 100 Mbit network. Had me pulling
my hair out for weeks.

search the registry using regedit and see if you can find an entry by
that name.

Good luck!

Mine was, indeed, set at 2144, so I changed it. Here's anoyther strange
thing....went to Napster, and can get dls in there at a reasonable 33 kb/s,
but can't get anywhere near that in IE. I was using v 5.5, so I even tried
the 6.0 beta, but no change there. So...it *seems * to be something to do
with IE...does that shed any light?

test applet read too slowly
or RWIN much too small!

So.....can anyone explain what I have to do to change this?

DSL Reports has a little utility to make that, and couple of other changes
to your registry automagically. You might want to grab it for future use.

I'd also double check to see if your NIC is sharing an IRQ with something
else. Theortically with the PCI bus this isn't a problem, in practice it can
be a biggy that can slow your downloads by factors of ten, especially if
it's sharing with an SB Live! card.

Your download speeds over cable should be in the hundreds on a good server.

I had the same problem when i got my cable modem, all you have to do is call
your cable company and tell them what is happening, they will ask you for your
modem,or serial number. then they will send commands to your modem.
then it will work great!

Kevin where do you get this utility? I have been having some odd

DSL Reports uses a lot of Java applets so I can't just give you the URL.

Go to the main page, click on Tools from the menu on the left, then Tweaks.
At the top of the page is combo box. Select RWIN and click Show. That'll do
it.

IF you go to Registry101 from the combo box it will show you what RWIN does
and how to do it manually.
