This is not directed to anyone but those who posted a reply to my GPL
posting below and gave nothing but ***to me about an honest opinion!!!
I know there were also replies which were good points and opinions so this
is not directed to them nor to the rest of you who I know are good people
and are here to help people give good questions and advise but those who do
nothing but put otheres down then this is to you!!!

I think I'm going to leave this Ng as some of you will be glad to here, I
posted my opinion of GPL on the Ng not meaning to offend anyone yet I get a
load of ***thrown in my face, by the sounds of the responses my post was
not read in full and I was told that I'm giving out a load of BS........if
thats how you like it then good riddens........if you think your sim racers
then think again!!!
Your nothing but aload of......oh never mind you'd just complain how I'm so

Hi Graham,
You have to understand that GPL is like a religious icon for some people on
this group. This does not reflect the views of most subscribers. To criticise
GPL is rather similar to insulting these people's mothers and they overreact. I
do not understand this zealous product loyalty. Everyone has a right to their
personal opinions, but no one has a right to slag anyone else off for theirs
(provided the view is not offensive). I am sorry to see that you have decided
to leave - I think everyone's opinion is worthwhile and the ng is in danger of
becoming a GPL only one. This would be a great loss. I have not had a chance to
play the full version of GPL because it is not out in the UK yet, but from what
I read in other posts opinion is very divided. There are other sims, there are
other types of car, and many, if not most, people will continue to drive these
other sims. My only hope is that these zealots will not hound everyone else off
r.a.s.

> HA! In what way is the opinion 'divided'?

Simply that quite a few people think the game is too difficult and a few others find
it too demanding on their hardware. Both seem to me to be valid views to air. As I
say, I've only played the demo, so am unable to speak personally on the game. I
intend to buy it as soon as it comes out and then I'll make up my own mind on it.

It's interesting... there seems to be a threshold.  If a game doesn't
make it, even by a little, then its good points are ignored and its weak
points are exagerated.  If a game gets 'over the hump' though, people
will defend it like their own children, even against valid complaints - at
least until something 1% better comes out.  After a certain number of
people like something, no one dares admit it could be flawed.

That's putting some very -ve spin on the GPL ball. I don't think anyone
can legitimately say GPL *isn't* the most authentic driving sim ever to
hit the PC. Nothing's perfect, but in terms of real world physics and thus
driving experience, GPL's crossed a threshhold and there's no going back.

I can understand though that not everyone has the time or inclination to
learn to drive a "real" race car. And I can easily understand that someone
looking for a good racing experience might find it in software like F1rs,
Toca, NFS, whatever. But as long as everyone's enjoying themselves, who
cares?

When I see a thread about NFS or Toca, I rarely feel the need to comment.
Tried them, had a laff, sold them...they just don't give me the experience
I'm looking for.

Those who've tried GPL and hate it should either learn to read and listen
carefully (heck, some people around here know what they're talking about!)
or they should go back to the software they enjoy.

Bottom line here is nobody should get flamed for having bad taste ;-) but
they'll sure get slapped for being stupid.

Andrew,
I wasn't trying to knock GPL, I'm just not in the position to do that. I will
buy it and I do expect to enjoy it - I enjoyed the demo but shyed away from
re-installing it when I upgraded to Windows 98 because of the problems
reported in this group. However I do take exception when people get flamed for
their perfectly valid views on GPL. When someone does put a -ve slant on GPL
or any sim, I think people are entitled to correct the points if they feel
that they are incorrect but not to round on that individual. If the guy thinks
GPL is too hard or uses too much system resources, that's his right just as
it's your right to dislike F1RS, TOCA and NFS. There's a guy at work who has
had several problems with racing sims over the past few months, problems that
could be simply solved had he posted to this group. He hasn't, though, because
he's too frightened of being flamed and 'slapped for being stupid' (which he's
very definitely not). Is that the image we all want to give out? Do we want to
restrict this group to those with thick skins and acid temperaments?

Stay around and don't let anyone's posts drive you off. I think almost every
regular here has been ripped to shreds by now so don't feel so bad.  :-)

I realised that, and my "beef" was with the idea that people have been
wildly flamed for disliking GPL. I've seen a lot of people try and help a
lot of others who were struggling. Frustration leads to dissatisfaction
and I'm sure that most GPL knockers are suffering from. It's a sim that
rewards the effort you put in, and some people don't have the time or
patience to do that. Which is fine... but to moan about it being too
difficult or whatever is daft.... like moaning that NFS is too easy.
Horses for courses.

Ah, but that's not what I said :-) I liked them a lot for what they are. I
bought all except F1rs and sold them on when I'd had some fun. But some
means a few hours. Nascar, ICR, and now GPL have kept me at the wheel
for... well, probably weeks of driving if I added it up over the years.

Mmm... that's a scary thought actually, like those stats that tell you how
long you'll spend on the toilet or picking your nose in a lifetime.

That's a shame, because there are enough helpful people around here to
make sure he gets a decent answer. There's always a chance some 12 year
old (or wannabe 12 year old) will get shitty, but that -- as they say --
is life. I'm no fan whatsoever of pointless flaming, and my reference to
people being slapped for stupidity probably wasn't aimed at people like
your friend.

My definition of stupidity is someone who doesn't think before they open
their mouth, not someone who just doesn't know the answer to a problem --
whether the world and his sister knows the answer or not.

No one should ever be worried about posting here. Worst that happens is
they get cheesed off with the replies and stop subscribing to the group...
that buys them a few extra minutes a day to do something useful instead...
like drive GPL :-)

There is a big difference between saying that you personally don't
like GPL because it is too hard and saying that it sucks and is
unrealistic because you can't drive it. The latter tends to be what
happens and what people take exception to.

With respect that probably says more about the guy at your work than
about this group. If my self-confidence was so shaky I would be upset
by what people here said about me then I'm sure David Fisher and I
would have reduced each other to tears and analysts by now! :-)

I know what you mean, but think it's overstated. It comes across as
"I'm not playing because no-one agrees with me". People disagree in
different degrees - listen to the good, killfile the dross. That way
you get "your" group without the hassle.

Cheers!

Hey, when did I ever get *** with you? Well, maybe way, way, back but I'm
sure it's been a long time.  :-)  I find your postings on sims to be as
informative as it gets here at r.a.s. I'm not seeing some posts on this

This is the Usenet, and it's taken differently than per example the IRC or
the Web. There's an ethic and somehow you really need to learn how to live

As I would joke.. the Usenet is a structured mess ;-)
