Arg... GPL is hosed

I think there is nothing worse than losing the ability to run GPL properly
*for no apparent reason*.  While not wanting to get into a long debate about
the relative merits of GPL versus other sims, it's the one which has
consistently stayed on my HD, even when I had to run it in ultra-low detail
on my older notebooks.

With my newer notebook (Dell, 1GHz, 32Mb GeForce2Go), I could finally run
the newest cars and tracks at 36fps.  It was sweet, and life was good.  Then
for no reason it developed a bizarre slow-motion problem which I posted
recently (under XP Pro).  Nothing I have done since has really fixed the
problem (clean install of XP, compatibilty mode, no sound acceleration,
various Nvidia drivers, dual boot to Win98SE etc.).  It really sucks not
being able to get it running properly, and it is especially irritating when
it worked before, but now it doesn't.  I don't ask for much, as it's the
only sim I run...

Just wanted to vent a bit.

CPU patch? I had a similar problem with my 1.2 Athlon. There's no reason not
to install it really, so give it a try.

Tried it with and without.  No luck.  I've also disabled all power
management at the BIOS level, cooled the notebook with a huge fan to see if
it was heat related, ran a bone-stock install with no upgrades etc.

Thanks anyway.

Was this after you installed a new program?

I get that effect if I first run F1GP (yes, the old World Circuit) and
then start GPL. It has also happened once in a while after I have run
some other program before starting GPL.

All my problems were cured with a reboot though.

Also, does it happen with all tracks? I've heard of people having this
problem, but only on addon tracks built with the GPLEA-tools. Original
and Noonan tracks was fine.

Cheers,

/Martin

The only thing I didn't check (now slapping my forehead in hindsight) was if
it ran ok immediately after installing Win XP over again.  I imagine it's
one of the Windows updates I did, but some can't be rolled back.  If I get
time some weekend, I will systematically look at this aspect.

Unfortunately not mine.  If I reboot and only run GPL, it happens.

Happens with all tracks, even the original Papy tracks without any graphical
enhancements.  I can leave the pits, but somewhere in the first few corners,
it drops to slow-mo.

I recently upgraded to XP also. After the upgrade and applying all patches
to XP all my racing sims including GPL ran great. I got on one of the XP
tweak sites and was happily tweaking away and making XP much faster. But I
took it one tweak to far and found out GPL quit working, the tweak that did
it was turning off Disk Drive indexing. That may not be your problem but are
there anything else you may have changed or tweaked? I actually forgot I did
this and then found a reference to it in a news group.
