The AI drivers learn with each race. At 1st, they'll sideswipe you down the
straights as if you aren't there (like some online racers), but you can beat
them into the corners. As they learn, they go into the corners deeper before
braking and will hit you from behind.
I find them pretty predictable. If you can't beat them to the 1st corner (GP
track), keep to the left going in and come out tight (to the inside). They
will try to follow the normal racing line on the track and you should be
able to pass them while exiting the corner. Remember to brake early enough
going in so you can gain speed on your exit (the fastest way to go slow is
to brake too late). The trick is to beat them into the next corner. If you
do that, it's pretty easy to stay in front of them.
When racing online, the 1st corner is also important. If you're racing a
good driver and he's beats you on the exit, you can't do much except hope he
makes a mistake (or several small ones) later. If you're running 1:35 laps,
don't try to run a 1:34 to catch him. You'll just get into trouble. He
either makes a mistake or he wins. If he's running 1:33s in a FWD car, don't
even race him. Just park your car and ride with him to see what you can
learn ;)
We all complain about the AI drivers in every racing sim. I'm beginning to
think the ones in LFS are among the best to race against.
