Building steering control

I am trying to build my own steering controller for use with Indycar.
Everything works well except the pot.  I hooked up a 100K pot to the
x-axis pins on the games port, and it works except I get a "dead" spot (0
value) in the low resistance ranges.  I've measured the resistance a
joystick puts out, and I though 100K would do it - I guess not.  Does
anyone know the proper pot I should be using?

P.S.  I've tried two different ones and they did the same thing.

Thanks, George Pastuszenko - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

[snip]
: Well if you know how to build electronic circuits i can post an optic encoder
: circuit that works very well. It's true linear, much better than mecanical
: systems.

Please do, or mail it to me, I have been considering a similar project.

Many thanks.
