Desktop resolution vs game resolution (F1C)

Guys,

How does the desktop resolution tie in with the resolution I'm using in a
game, particularly F1C?

Currently I'm using a 1600x1200 16 bit desktop, with a fairly large jpeg as
the background.
In F1C, I'm running 1600x1200 32 bit, and my frame rates are acceptable, but
any improvement would be most welcome.

Is my desktop likely to cause performance issues in games, because it has to
be stored somewhere while the game is executing? Should I get rid of the
jpeg?
Would my frame rates be improved by making my desktop resolution the same as
I use in the game, or lower (I can't go any higher).

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I dunno, but give it a quick go! Should only take a minute :)

"Back in the day" the rule of thumb was to keep your desktop the same size
as what you gamed in.  With today's hardware/software I don't know if that
still matters. If your looking for an improvment in frame rate I'd suggest
going down a little in screen res would do way more than any desktop tweaks.
I have found that running higher levels of FSAA and AF on a lower screen res
gives me better performance/image on my 9700pro/AMD 2100xp CPU.  If you have
a good video card you may want to try something along that line

I don't think it affects it, apart from refresh rate, which in games
that don't have a refresh rate setting, will usually default to the
setting you have for the selected resolution for your desktop.

Why on earth do you you have 16 bit desktop and 32 bit for ***? I
could understand the other way around for speeding up a game, but that
seems very strange to me.

That depends on the amount of memory in your machine and how big the
image is.

I very much doubt it.

Just installed a new graphics card, configured the desktop to what I always
used, then configured the game, and tried different settings. Have only just
thought about the desktop issue, whilst at work.

There is a mention in the F1C readme regarding the degradation of
performance with screen rez over 1024x768 as I recall although I don't
see it there now. Hmmmm....

I do recall with certainty that this was mentioned somwhere by an EA
authority, not just "someone" who said so......

I suppose that a powerful enough machine would overcome this, however.

That's very true for most cards (particularly in 32-bit) but a Radeon 9700+
can go higher without penalty.
