a GeForce card (he's one of that sad band who don't understand GPL, so
doesn't want a Voodoo) has given me his old V3-2000 PCI.
Now, I've got one of those cheapo systems with an integrated Intel 810,
so as the V3 is a combined 2D/3D card, I had to mess around in the BIOS
to disable it, which wasn't fun (though, in the end, fairly
straightforward - just tell the machine to give the PCI slot priority).
And GPL is belting along now. It's a revelation being able to start at
the back of the pack in a race, in 800x600, with most of the graphics
on, and actually have a playable frame rate! And I can keep a steady
36fps once things have got going. So, I guess it's time to resurrect my
aim of getting my GPLRank handicap below 50 (now 64).
Only one pain - I can't get the refresh rate above 75Hz, whereas the
onboard card was quite happy at 85. A minor quibble, though, as 75 is
steady enough, and the speed gain is wonderful!
