Yesterday, an idea came to my mind.  Scary, huh?  Anyways... this would work
as either a patch or a brand new sim.

Indy......

Yes, a sim with just one track.  The famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  The
catch is that instead of a sim with many tracks and one type of car, have
one track and many different cars.  50's cars, 60's cars, 70's cars, 80's
cars, 90's cars.  Throw all of em in there.  It could simulate the entire
month of May.  The track could have many different folders, like Indy50,
Indy60... ect...  So it would be possible to make the track look as it did
during the time period.

Good idea. I believe its only been mentioned one or two times over the last
couple of years :)   Forgot when I saw it but the thread also had my
personal favourite in this line of ideas which was, in  essence,  "LeMans-
from the beginning until now".

You're right though, "Indy through the ages" would probably sell well, at
least to the North American market. Biggest problem I could see, apart from
getting IMS to license it at a reasonable price, would be getting halfways
accurate data on the handleing of the older cars on their old style tires.
Fortuneatly the Indy Museum could provide *some* answers. Also while the
track configuration has more or less remained the same over the years you'd
probably have to model it about 6 times to reflect the various changes in
the surface of the circuit, subtle alteration of the corners ( rumble
strips,banking  and the like), various buildings and access points ,etc. So
I doubt if such a sim would be any easier to do than, say a full blown
racing series with several tracks. I'd buy it though

I have heard crazier ideas. It would be interesting. I don't know how long
it would take before it would get boring, because of being only one track.

  You could take a page from the BASEBALL/Football video games and allow the
creation of a fantasy field.
i.e.  Take AJ Foyt and put him in a Modern IRL car, or Send Jimmy Clark back
to 30's.  This would require a completely separate physics model for each
car AND EACH DRIVER tho..
  You could also hold a WINSTON type event where the field is composed on
only past winners.
  And Indy has gone through at least ONE major track change,...I'm guessing
back in the 80's...After Mario Andretti forced Danny Sullivan down onto the
apron..
Danny's 'Spin & Win' race.  But the old Indy used to have rounded corners,
now they are more squared to prevent the chopping down under the white line
that was common back then.
  Here's one more field idea...the Broken Field..Guys like Lloyd Ruby and
Michael Andretti.  Guys who were obviously the class of thier era's but
never got a win...always breaking down before the finish...
  Then the classic cars would also come into play...i.e. could the classic
STP Turbine vacume cleaner stand up to a 80's Lola turbo-Ford Combo???
damn I should get consulting fees for writing the desing specs...:)

Hey, why not take the mother of all tracks then and do a

*insert drum-roll here*

"Nuerburgring-Simulator"

You could even drive a huge coach, a thunderbike or do a half-marathon on
this track because all of this exists in real life ;).
