Steering Wheel Purchase Advice

by Hoops7 » Fri, 28 Mar 2003 01:26:49

Hi all,

Been out of the sim racing loop for a while and am just after some
advice as to what is the favoured race controller right now. I am in
the UK and would welcome any advice before I go ahead and grab one.

I previously was using a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback (serial
connection) which no longer works under XP, a Logitech Formula Force
(I think that's what it was called.. one of the early Logitech force
feedback units) which no longer works and am right now using my old
Thrustmaster Formula 1 but it is very jittery so am after a more up to
date device. I also have a modified Thrustmaster T2 but I imagine that
too will struggle with the newer OS and games.

I mainly want it for GPL, GP4 and Nascar 2003.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Many thanks

Peter

You can check the Reviews section of eRacer Garage for wheel and related
information.
The new Logitech MOMOs are good choices, as is the MS Sidewinder.  If your
looking to pay more try TSW or BRD.

I use the ActLabs ForceRS. I have no complaints so far. I use win2k and have
had no problems with drivers and games. I have used it with no problems with
gpl, gp4, nascar2002, etc. The force effects are very good, and it is a very
sturdy wheel, feels like you could throw it out the window and expect it to
land in one piece (don't try it tho) =). They delivered pretty quickly to
the UK. I went for the performance pedals too, and they are the best i've
every used. The GPL shifter is quite good, although the novelty will wear
off when you are trying to drive quickly. I prefer the force rs to the ms
sidewinder ff, but thats just my opinion.

Yes don't try that. They are not that well built. I had a guy in my DTRSC
league that did throw it out the window. He even post pics of what was left
of the wheel and the window. No it wasn't open.

MSFFW Pedals aren't that good?

They are pretty well regarded as far as I know.  They are about the best in
a consumer class wheel you can get, and they are extremely comfortable with
a good, long throw to them.

And it may be 'plastiky', but they sure don't fall apart.

To reply....

I didn't say they are *NOT* well regarded.

Lots of people add squash balls to add feel to the brake pedal, is that
cos they are good out of the box or not?

I said they *ARE* good quality.

I didn't say that they fall apart.

The original poster asked "what is the favoured race controller right
now"?

Thats a ***e to answer as opinions on wheels and pedals are
subjective. Becuase of this I did not offer specific advice.

However, generally the "best" wheel and pedal set-ups (which also happen
to be the most expensive) are usually quoted as being either TSW (Thomas
Super Wheel) ECCI (Extreme Competition Controls Inc) or BRD (Ball Racing
Developments. NB: I understand that ECCI no longer sell wheels to the
general public?

All are very high quality, very durable, well made, feel good, and last
for ages. But at a cost.

Of the mid range set-ups, (which include the MS stuff) there are many and
various makers, all have good and bad points and vary in price.

Many thanks for all the suggestions guys,

I actually went for the Logitech Momo Force in the end, I read mainly
good reviews about it and it had the added advantage that it was
available locally so no delivery hassles. I may also pick up the
Act-Labs USB GPL shifter at some point as I do like to have the stick
shifter for GPL and Nascar sims.

As an added bonus I got the Momo for 40 quid less than it was priced
at on the shelf!! Not sure whether it was an incorrect bar code on the
box or a special offer but I wasn't about to argue and took it and ran
;)

I haven't had a run with the Mom yet but I'll certainly let you all
know what I think once I get it setup.

Thanks again.

It just stopped working... the power led doesn't come on at all.

It's the red wheel version.. loved it while it was working.

Might be a very simple power-cut by defective brick or broken wire.
Did you check whether the unit get's power?
