GPL bombs out

by Donal Roger » Thu, 17 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Hello all,
I have just built a PII 350, with 128MB RAM, 8GB HDD and 16MB Diamond
Viper v550 AGP. I downloaded and installed the OpenGL drivers (wow, what
a difference), but without any warning, the game will simply bomb back
to Windows (Win95 B OSR 2.2). This does not happen with any regularity
or predictability, but it does happen. For readers of this in the UK or
Ireland, another odd thing that happens is that whenever I insert a PCW
cover CD into the CD-ROM drive and the program autostarts, whenever I
click onto any of the menus, the whole application stops responding.
Windows caries on as if nothing has happened, but this application just
dies. I am starting to think that I might have faulty RAM. Has anyone
else experienced problems with GPL bombing out, or is it just me?
Donal.

Hi Donal !

I had the same problem with GPL "bombing out" to Windows. I have a PII 450
Mhz, 256 RAM, 16 MB TNT card ( I ran GPL without the OpenGL patch ) and
Win98. However, since I installed two 16 MB Orchid Righteous 3DII cards in
SLI mode, the "bombing" has disappeared !

My logical ;-) answer to this is that there seems to be some incompatibility
between GPL and TNT cards.

You might want to try to run GPL with a Voodoo2 card instead of you present
config....

Regards,
Carl Westman

You've done better than me.

I've just installed the OGL patch on my new PII 350 with CL TNT card and I
don't get past the first screen.  The screen looks fine, you even get the
movement in the red and green patches in the bottom corners.  But the mouse
pointer is frozen and I can't get any further.

GPL bombs out

<snip>

I'm using a Elsa TNT card with reference Nvidia drivers with my
Celeron 450A, works OK.  The only problems I'm having is that
800x600 doesn't display correctly, and the documented "mirror"
bug.

If you already have the latest Open GL patch from Papyrus (note
the mirror settings), then I would try getting and installing the
lastest reference Nvidia drivers.

I think I'll try the OpenGL patch later on, but for now I'm quite happy with
my 3dfx config .....
