GPL: reverse gear

by Laurens de Jon » Mon, 10 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Today I was slowly coasting into the pits, mad at my inability to break any
track records, when I downshifted all the way into reverse.  To my surprise,
the car kept right on going.  I went to start a GP race, meaning damage was
on, and tried it again.  Sure enough, and up to pretty decent speeds, too.

What's going on here?  I know that my Audi can be put in reverse while it's
still going forward, thanks to its reverse gear also being syncromeshed, but
I don't believe I can also release the clutch at anything of forward speed.
Someone shed some light on this, please?

I don't know of anyway to help you, but if I pop the car into reverse while
going the right way, I'm gonna be looking at oncoming traffic head-on!  :-)

This is odd. I'm quite sure that when I do this, my car (I usually
race Eagle and Honda) becomes a bucking bronco, with little chance of
recovery.

Did you try accelerating when you were in the reverse gear? Surely
that would have caused a spin?

Let me clarify.  Once it snaps in reverse gear, I have to show some
steermanship to keep it in line, but then I can floor it and all it does is
slow down.

Feels... unright.

i love to use the reverse gear in gpl (i use it as my brakes when ever i finish
an online race...)

i think the reason you can get away with going forward in reverse is because
gpl works the clutch automaticly (or something like that) i mean dosent it also
seem funny that the car never stalls... if you did something like the in real
life it would probably result in some pretty bad drive train damage, but im not
expert...

if you pay attention to what happens when you put it in reverse at speed (with
the throtle closed of course) it drags the rear tires for a second and then
then spin freely. i think gpl puts it in gear, and then it senses that the
engine wouldnt realy be running in that situation so it forces the clutch to be
used

i hope that made sense :)

That made perfect sense.  I hadn't thought of the auto-clutch
kicking in in this situation, but I really think that's it.  I
also think the gearbox would be pretty much broken before GPL
clutches for me, but that's another story.

Wait a minute... it can't be the clutch.  Because, I can push the
throttle all the way down and it doesn't rev.  Hmm, back to
square one?

I think GPL does some odd things with engines at times.  Another
example is if you sit in the sand trap at Monza you can have the
accelerator flat to the floor in first and the engine won't be ticking
over.  It's quite strange.

I think that may not be an engine but tyre effect. Perhaps GPL models
the contact velocity dependent wheel resistance due to the material
being thrown away by the tyres. Or perhaps not.

hmm  I use to take the 76 Buick (HUGE CAR) i owned when I was 18 into a
snowy parking lot, get it goin 20 mph or more then slide er into neutral
then reverse and floor it +)  hehe I called into practicing winter
driving lol.  Never did have any *** troubles with that car, tho it
was an auto, not sure if it was a turbo 350.

It was drinking and driving that finally killed that car.  after a day
of Gravel Running (anyone remember that?) with a case of beer between 3
of us, I tried to do the local 1 lane 'S' bridge at 75 mph.  We all
lived and even drove away, but not until after hitting both sides of the
bridge putting 6" deep dents all the way down both sides of the car,
taking the exhaust off it, into a 10 ft deep ditch and out again.  Lucky
to be alive, any modern car and I wouldn't be here writing this today,
nor would my friends.

1 for the road?!  I'll drive after 1 drink but no more, its not worth it
people!!

My thots

Funny how this discussion would never come up if this was N3 we were
