I downloaded and installed this tweaker today.  But, ya know, I'm a hopeless
former liberal arts major and all of those numbers and decimal places scare
me.

I want to slow the field down enough so that I can qualify four or five
places better than my usual 12th thru 15th or so.

Which function will do this?  Please help the math impaired!

Use the Override AI improvement/Track editor and set each track you drive at
to a lower than 100% setting.  I think setting it to 95% to start would be
good.  It won't take too much practise before you are ramming the AI up the
rear end and will need to bump up the % incrementally towards 100!!
