I spotted a budget release of GPL the other day.  I think the publisher
was Soldout Software or something similar.

I might be mistaken, but I believe its been available that way for a several
years now....jewel case only version, no manaula, and the patches are
available right on the cd...

I wish they would open source it like Id does with their older titles.  I
would love to see what the community could do with some updates to the
graphics and sound code and (dare I say it?) the "tire model".

    Correct.

I'm still not clear on GPL '65 and future mods.  I'm sure that
tire-related constants have been located in the .exe and can be changed, but
can an improved tiremodel be substituted without having access to the
sourcecode ?

I would like to see tire wear.  I don't think there is any way to get that
in without rewriting the source code.  I know it was minimal in real life
but the fact is that tire wear and pitting did affect real life races.  For
the same reason, I would like to see weather (Mosport e.g. should be a rain
race) and real pitting rather than shift-r.  I would also like to see
dynamic camber, and brake heat and wear.  And I don't believe the zero
lift/downforce thing is accurate, those cars should probably have a fair
amount of front lift and perhaps some rear downforce, which would make them
handle very differently at high speeds.  These are all things that would
have to be done in the source code.  It would be a big project, but I have
seen some amazing things done with open source games in other genres so I'm
sure the GPL community could do it if the code were available.

One more comment, since it is likely to come up.  There would be a potential
issue with cheating.  I think this is actually pretty easy to fix. Change
the network protocol so that the community GPL cannot connect to the Papy
GPL, and institute some sort of client check to verify files, as is done
with many other games.  Given the right tools and sufficient community
interest, we could have an updated, cheatproof GPL without affecting people
who are still playing the Papy game.  This kind of thing has been done with
other games, and we can too, but we need the source code.

2004:

Sold Out are (at least originally) a British budget label - GPL's
been out on their label for 5 for a good while now. I haven't seen
it in the shops for a bit, but it's forever being sold on eBay UK.

There was a lengthy thread on why there will most likely not be a modded 67
gpl.exe due to things that cannot be corrected currently without the source
code...personally GPL has be a great title over the years, and the work that
would probably be involved to add the requested features, and of course most
would not pay for it, look a the situation with Noonan's track converter, it
just seems best to let the 67 season stay a gfx update only.
