Wheel question for newbie..

by ExMrBlond » Tue, 18 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hi guys,

I must admit that I'd NEVER heard of GPL (shock, horror you say) before I
saw GP3 advertised in Harvey Norman (Aussie computer store) and stumbled
across this NG to find out what the rest of the world thinks.  I lived in
England for 2 years and I got stuck into GP2, and I couldn't get enough.
Well, as things go, I bought a new PC on my arrival back in Oz (P111,
600MHz) and I'm looking at buying a wheel to go along with the BRAND
SPANKING NEW copy of GPL I just bought, but can't play properly without a
wheel.  My question is, what damn wheel should I buy ??  The Microsoft
Sidewinder FF seems like a good wheel, but I haven't heard anything too
positive about it form everyone here.  The only other FF wheel I could find
was a Logitech wheel which retails about AU$30 cheaper than the sidewinder.

Please help guide this misguided soul who has lost 2 years of GPL experience
(please, I could do without the pity), and is about to be hooked by not 1,
but 2 great games.

I'm a GPL newbie, too, and I choose the Logitech Wingman Force Feedback
wheel. After tweaking the settings, I've found it to be an excellent wheel
for this game. Another good wheel is the ACT Labs Force RS wheel. See here:

The USB version of the MSFF wheel causes about a 30% slowdown in GPL.  The
Logitech is much better.

The majority opinion here is that the Logitech is better than the MS
(especially as the MS - *including* the serial version, despite what
others say - hits the fps quite hard). I;m in the minority, though, and
find the MS wheel considerably more cofortable (and it gets me faster
times, too, which is what I really want!).

You really must try a wheel out before you buy it, or at least buy from
EB or similar with a sensible returns policy.

I'm a big fan of the Microsoft wheel, but I'm a bit biased. Check out the
Act Labs system. Logitech, MS, and Act Labs have all tested fairly even in
terms of performance although the MS wheel takes more CPU cycles apparently.
The cool thing about the Act Labs system is that you can add a H-pattern
shifter to allow you (in games that support it) to drop from say 5th gear to
2nd gear without traveling through 4th and 3rd.

If you're not interested in FF (I find it distracting rather than immersive)
take a look at Thomas Super Wheels (http://www.thomas-superwheel.com). IMHO
the very best non-FF wheels out there. At $350, the modified TSW2 is a
fantastic wheel and pedal system with a clutch!

Anyway, get a wheel and say goodbye to your life as you now know it.

.  My question is, what damn wheel should I buy ??  The Microsoft
To confuse you even greater , it seems that the Logitech is more precise and
CPU efficient , however , the MSFF has much better pedals . There's been
much talk of the MSFF taking a CPU hit , however , mine doesn't seem to make
any difference when I disable FF.

Welcome to the GPL club . If you haven't been there already the visit

You'll find loads of other sites around supporting GPL
