First there is an official move to do just this. If you are truly
interested in creating other r.a.s. sub-groups, you need to subscribe to
the newsgroup news.groups. Here you can participate in the process.
Secondly, I really should not be carrying on this discussion here, but
since it sits here I will follow it up. However I invite others to
continue this conversation in news.groups (where I will also post this
response under a subject containing "rec.autos.simulators").
It's not difficult to discuss other sims in r.a.s., just do it. For the
last week or 2 I will admit that GP2 has constituted the wealth of
postings here in r.a.s. However, in the past this honor has been held
by other sims (ICR2, NASCAR, HAWAII). One can't have a discussion if
someone doesn't post something. There have been only a small handful of
postings related to non-GP2 sims in the last few days.
To help in posting about a sim in a multi-sim newsgroup, please prefix
your Subject Heading with a code for the sim (ICR2:, NASCAR:, HAWAII:,
NFS:, GP2, etc.) This way people who only wish to discuss or read about
a particular sim can easily find what they are looking for. They can
also avoid reading about a sim they don't care about. Not only does
this help readers, it helps the poster. Especially if they are looking
for information or an answer.
Some people seem to have the misconception that simply creating a new
sub-newsgroup will generate postings. This arguement sounds interesting
in times such as this, when one sim is the hot topic because it just
came out. But, in the long run this is a naive concept. If a sub-group
does not generate lots of traffic, people will lose interest and it will
wither on the vine. It also will not be an attractive newsgroup to new
potential readers/posters.
The other thing mentioned in this post (contributions only lasting a
day or so). A poster's contribution stays for quite some time in the
newsgroups. The length of time one can see it depends on how long your
ISP keeps news around. I think mine keeps news for around 2 weeks.
It's your newsreader that is not showing you old posts. This is to keep
you from having to weed thru thousands of posts you've already read. A
good newsreader will allow you to pull all posts stored in by your ISP.
