GP2 Basic Questions

I bought GP2 a wile ago and traded it in favor of playing ICR2.  My T2
is currently being fixed by thrustmaster and I was at Best Buy and saw
GP2 for 25$ so I thought I'd give it anothor shot.  I am running into a
number of problems and I am starting to remember why I gave up on this
game to begin with.  Anybody with any ideas please help!

The car stears for me!  This SUX!  I do some of the stearing but the
CPU also stears.  Maybie this is because opp. lock help and steering
help in the control menu are on but I can't seem to turn them off unless
I go to joystick, but I don't have a joystick now.  Is there anyway to
turn these off when using the keys?

I can only shift with the space bar, both up and down.  It changes
according to how the suggested gear is.  I couldn't find anyway to set
one key for up and one for down.  can't I change this?

The mouse dosen't work in the menus screen.

        There is no sound.

With all detail on and all textures I get an estimate of 8.2 fps.
8.2!  That SUX!  I have a Pro 200 so this dosen't seem right.  Will I
have to go back to 320X200?  I have tried fastvid and it didn't help.

anyone with any advice please reply

No. Use a joy, or even better, a wheel.

Yes. Select a "Not used" instead of keyboard, and you will be able to
change it.

You probably need a mouse driver. GP2 has no "build-in" mouse driver.

Check your sound card setting. Should work.

No, but remove details like sky ect. BTW On my P200 it seems like the
estimate is a little conservative, but I have no confirmation on this.

< Problems with not having T2 wheel snipped >

Processors will continue to get faster all the time.  It doesn't
bother me if a sim developer wants to produce code that can take
advantage of faster processors than are available now.  When maxed,
such sims will bring P6/200, like ours. to their knees.

   8.2 FPS, with fastvid?  Ouch.

I have an older P6 with the Debugged Orion chip set, and a
single bank of memory, two things that slow it down a little.  If
you have a Natoma, especially one with two banks of RAM, you should
do better than me.  One good thing I have is a Matrox Millennium 4
Meg card.

I run with no sky and NOTHING for mirror detail. Tthe cars float
in a blue field.  It's enough for me to see what's going on.  All
other details are maxed, SVGA.

This setup has an estimated 24 FPS, and I'm doing what many
are, and running it at 2 FPS less than suggested, so I'm set up
for 22 FPS.  At this setting, the graphics seem to me to be "Like
the movies", in terms of being smooth.  Processor occupancy stays
below 100% for most of the race, but it can be higher, like 150%
when all the cars are bunched at the start.  These Processor
Occupancy numbers are from a "hot lap" tape, I find it hard to
hold the key down while actually driving the sim.

Monaco, with all those buildings, is more demanding, and I
usually run that at 18 FPS.  I find that still a lot of fun.

Anyway, your P6 shouldn't be any slower than mine.  Try
setting the details like I do, if you don't have at least 24 FPS,
and if you are SURE you have Fastvid running properly.  And if
your video card is as good as the Millennium, then you have a
problem.  I believe Fastvid was developed with the Millennium,
so perhaps there is a better fit than with other cards.

No, William, there's no way to turn them off. If you could, then would
be impossible to control the stearing just using the left and right
keys, even hitting keys with many short strokes. It's impossible for
just 2 keys to make it with the smoothness and continuously as with
the wheel. That's why the game stears a bit for you. But this doesn't
take you the merit of determine the right line, which is so much
important do drive safe and fast.

BTW, this is very well done by Mr. Crammond  and Microprose, in my
opinion.

Yes, you can and, in my opinion, you should do it soon. You may want
to use "space bar" to change up, and "Alt" to change down.

As said by the other fellow here, from the Main Menu press "Control
Method", then press "Advanced Menu", check any of four "Not Used"
options and you'll be able search the keys for up and down changes.
