TACO: blower of donkey's and similar cylindrical shaped objects.

I specifically came to this newsgroup before I download it. "this game
looks good" etc. My.. I wasn't impressed at all. of course, it's more
driveable than TestDrive 4 but it is so slow you probably need a pentium
300 and an 8meg 3d card to play in hi-res. No I don't have a 3d card, but
that shouldn't prevent me from playing such a crappy game in at least
640x480 should it? I've played better games in hi-res.

The game play itself sucks. The computer cars don't compete among
themselves, they just follow each other waiting for me to disrupt the
flow. Graphics suck. period ( at least from the 320x200 seat I go in the
stadium ). Hell no I'm not using a p90, not a p133, not a p166 but a p200
with my S3.

but what Test Drive 4 was lacking, TACO had it. Driving was natural, not
too difficult, eg, if you came of the grass and tried to make that turn,
your back wheels would spin out. This is becomes so obvious that I begun
to use it to my advantage in tight corners. There is no reason to follow
the track  in a "U" turn. Just go on the grass and as soon as your back
wheels touch the road, the car spins itself into position :)

It is pretty terrible without a 3D(fx) card (or in my case, one that
doesn't work because it slipped out of the slot because of my weird
computer case).. I had the graphics details turned all the way down,
but the whole thing was all still pretty bad: the frame-rate, the
graphics, my lap times, the AI cars.

However, if you do have a 3D card, it is just fine. My lap times
improved, the graphics looked great, and the AI raced and spun each
other out on a regular basis.

I'm sorry to say but this game is actually pretty good but it should
have added that it REQUIRES a good 3d card.

In software mode, it simply is unplayable and lacking so much that I can
understand your disgust with it.

However, once I turn on my 3dfx card, the game turns from a toad into a
fairy that races.

Get a 3dfx/Voodoo vid card, that's all there is too it.

Um, yes it should. There's no game with *textured* graphics that can
play in 640x480 on a P200 with a solid frame rate (same CPU I have).
The one with the best graphics engine is Nascar2, and even with it you
have to turn off a bunch of textures. What you need, my friend, is a
3dfx card.

Are you playing the same game? I'm having a riot with the demo because
for the first time, here's a game where it really feels like the other
cars are driven by people. The bump each other, move around, sometimes
knock each other off the track, sometimes just make a miscalculation
on a corner and end up in a sandtrap.

The real races have turned very much into processions now.  It used to
be so much better...
The AI seem to be a load of hooligans who don't need to bother too much
about the line they take (because of arcade physics - too much grip?)
and make too many mistakes, again in the interests of arcade action, I'm
sure.  The AI come across to me as being artificially packed up,
probably as the game is being marketted as being 'pack' racing.
It's fun, but that's it.  Pure arcade stuff which I'll probably buy, but
it's far from being a sim.
Those graphics, though, even with a 3Dfx (and yes it's being used) are
very poor.  Framerates vary wildly and the draw distance is lame.
They're usable, but no more.  Should be a hell of a lot smoother.

Cheers,

TACO? Now that really has everything I want! I'm quite partial to a
burrito as well, and fajitas are another fave, but in all honesty you
can't beat a good TACO, and Codemasters should be proud of themselves!

:)

Cheers!

I don't see why this would bother anyone, since it's never pretended
to be anything else.

I disagree. They aren't top notch, but not bad at all either. I find
the frame-rate is solid and consistent (at Medium res High detail) on
a P200 w/3dfx. And the graphics don't look that bad - some of the
effects are very good: rain, sun-glare, reflections on the track when
it's wet, damaga on cars, etc.

Thats your problem right there, you don't have a 3d card.  The game plays
great on my Righteous3d card... nice and fast, with great gameplay and
graphics.  I really like it...

Yep! I played it with the 'software rendering' option on by mistake and
it was awefull BUT this is a different game with a 3dfx card -
fantastic. Way ahead of NASCAR2 in terms of driving feel. Visually
stunning.
