If the driver of an F1 car wanted to blow his engine then he could in
theory downshift very quickly and blow it, but on the up shifting I am
fairly certain that they are rev limited.  I wonder if F1GP2 will have
a rev limiter or if you will just be able to accelerate until you blow
the engine like all other driving games.

F1 cars do indeed have rev limiters. The cause of an angine blowup
isn't usually excessive revs, but excessive heat caused by sustained
high revs. (Excessive revs will cause excessive heat, but that's not
the only cause.) That's why Hockenheim is an engine breaker; the
engines runs at full power for something like 80% (????) of the time. A
good engine will cope with the strain - remember Schumacher driving
most of a race stuck in 5th last year? Must've strained the engine
along the straights.

Drafting/slipstreaming can also cause blowups, since the engine runs
faster than it would normally.

As far as I know, most driver-caused engine blowups happen during spins - going
backwards while in gear. That will blow an engine pretty much anytime, as far
as I know. I think it is still fairly possible to do it by downshifting too fast,
as well. Wrong newsgroup, I know. I quite like the thought of having reliability
factors in F1GP2 - now I'll know what it is like to be Paul Belmondo.... :-)
