Look, there seems to be a misunderstanding of my post concerning a Nascar PCX
binary posting the other day.

I merely informed the original poster that this is not a binary newsgroup, and
as such no binaries should be posted here.

Considering that IndyCar Racing and NASCAR Racing both allow for a lot of file
exchanges, as do several other racing sims and most likely those yet to come,
we could use a binary newsgroup expressly for this purpose.

PCX and STG files (Papyrus) are very small files and wouldn't take up much
bandwidth, but they would properly be posted in a binary group.  Something
along the lines of alt.binaries.racing may be too broad, but it could cover a
number of racing related material including these PCXs and STGs.  There could
be GIFs and JPGs of our favorite drivers and cars.

Any comments or suggestions.  I'm sure somebody out there could come up with a
better group name.

BTW, That DE3 car was rather nice, and as I said in my original reply, his
intensions were obviously well-meant.

It's not a matter of voting to post binaries HERE.  If binaries are to be
posted, an existing group should be designated to hold those binaries, or a
new one created.  It's simple netiquette.  I have plenty of custom cars to
post myself, but being a regular user of the newsgroups, I understand the
guidelines, and try my best to stick by them.

Sure, there should be a dedicated binary group, but until one exists-here
is fine. The traffic here is light enough.

A good alternative is an ftp site and announce it here-like the '95 cars.
Your choice...

When I wrote the charter for this newsgroup, I have to admit that I did
not consider the problem of binaries. Ralf is correct, of course, that
binaries do not really belong here. If people really feel a need for
a binaries newsgroup, then we should start by creating a group in the
alt hierarchy (something like alt.autos.simulators.binaries) which
could then "grow up" to be a fully-fledged group one day. I doubt
there is enough interest or support for splitting rec.autos.simulators
yet.

In the meantime, there are anonymous ftp sites that can be used for
transfering binaries.

No. This would be a good way to get admins to drop the newsgroup,
and severely restrict its propagation. Rather, if people really want
to post binaries, we should start another group, initially in the
alt.* hierarchy.

But, there are those (like me) whose access to ftp is curtailed by the volume of traffic on our internet links. Unless people want to see loads of "mail me..." and "me too" posts I think that either a new area, allowing binaries OR a set of mailing lists whereyou can subscribe to a particular sim and get bins for it! (this one gets my vote :] )

Most large anonymous ftp servers have mail gateways - i.e., you
send mail to an address at the machine aksing for files, and they
are automatically posted to you. If you see an ftp address listed,
then try sending mail to the postmaster asking if they have this service.

If people really want to see a binaries group, then I still think the
best idea (initially) is to start an alt group. It is relatively easy
to do this.

IMHO it's just fine to post binaries in this group.  The Earnhardt that
was posted was the best I have gotten from anywher and it's about the 6th one
I've seen.  What do binaries bother anyway.  If you don't like it then don't
look at or read the damned post.  It's that simple.  Some of us don't have
access to an ftp site and the news is the only was to get binaries.  So until
we get an alt group which is a great idea I think people should quite griping
about somebody else's attempt to help their fellow racing fan by posting a
very impressive car.
