consensus "best" racing equipment?

by millar.. » Wed, 15 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I am new to online sim racing and want to get
into this thing seriously.  I have no illusions
that what it takes is lots of practice, and that
you can't "buy" racing ability.  What I would
like to know is what steering wheel or wheels the
truly elite online racers are using to win with,
as I would like to eventually become
competitive.  There is a lot of discussion about
ff vs. non-ff, and the most expensive wheels are
mostly non-ff.  I assume that this is partly
because small high-precision wheel makers do not
have the resources to make a ff wheel - am I
right about this? (I am not trying to start
another ff v. non-ff debate, just seeking as much
info as I can get).  Also, what are the
advantages of digital vs. analogue steering
wheels, and who makes the best of each? Is there
a site where a survey has been taken as to what
wheels various top drivers are using?  Ie., what
is the consensus "best" wheel availiable?  Assume
that money is no object when responding to these
questions, as this is a search for the best
product, not a cost saving exercise.  I am sorry
if all of these questions have been asked and
answered many times before, but, as I said, I am
new and have to start somewhere.  Thanks.

http://www.arrakis.es/~javiermh/index.htm lists the equipment of many
of the top drivers under their profiles.  I have heard a lot of raves
about hyperstims and ECCI controllers and the Redlines look very nice.
I absolutely luv my tsw.  www.thomas-superwheel.com  You will find that
most of the hotshoes dont use expensive equipment.

I have tried a number of them, and I can safely say that without doubt, the
Hyper Stimulator is by far the best wheel and pedal set available.

Ok, it is a***pit you sit in (technically not a wheel on it's own) but it
is made for users (not specialised corporate equipment).  There is nothing
that comes close to replicating the feel of a full racing car.  Just sitting
in it adds greatly to the experience of simulation racing improving your
times....

Check em out for yourself...

Phillip McNell

consensus "best" racing equipment?

You can't possiably say that James unless you've tried all of them.
Have you tried a ECC ? These people put as much presission into just
the hardware that Hyperstim puts into the whole***pit. Tried a TSW ?
Tried any one of another half dozen I could mention ?

All you can say, is that it is the best that you have tried, and you
have not tried them all.

Perhaps its also appropriate to mention that you work for Hyperstim as
well - at least on numerious occasions. People may think that you are
a netrual party - which I don't know that you can say you are.

As you have said recently, that you are actively canvasing Hyperstim
to either give you one or at least give you one at a substantial
discount, one might expect the usual conflicting interest caveats to
apply.

What comes close is anyone with a modest amount of woodworking ability
and a good controler, like a ECC to put in it. Hyper frames are only
made out of wood you know.
