My mother board and AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.1ghz showed up today.
I expect the 256megs of Crucial Cas 2 memory to arrive tomorrow.  But I have
a question or two.  The heatsink and fan that come with the chip has
a bit of double-sided tape and a couple of brackets to attach it to the cpu.
Does this setup actually work?  The mother board has a separate sheet
warning about heat and using Thermal Paste.  What should I do?  Install
the factory heatsink or gob on some radio shack goo?

Get some thermal paste and remove the tape. Use the goo sparingly too.
Just a thin layer is all that is needed.

Hey, Dave -- better get that Athlon up and running quick, because I
just passed you in the F1CS2K Rank!

If you're going to 'overclock' your processor - then try and remove the
stuff that comes on the bottom of the heat sink and replace with something
like "Arctic Silver" - various overclocking stores have it.

Otherwise - just make sure you peel the cover off that tape on the Heatsink,
and be carefull when installing it (try pulling up on the heatsink as you
push down on the metal brakets)  Lots of sob-stories about people crushing
the core of the T'bird!

Now that I've scared you enough - enjoy your hardware!

| I just finished building one of those rigs.....about 20 days ago.  You are
| in for more than a "heat-sink" issue....depending on the mobo (which one
did
| you get?).  Sorry I didn't respond to this earlier....I saw this post

| and didn't realize this post was yours.....until it was pointed out to me

  MSI(Microstar K7t Turbo(rev 3)  I'm worried, the AGP socket looks
dangerously close to the clips that hold the memory sticks.  I don't know
if my monster sized V5 will clear the clips.

It will, but only *just*, so you need to put the memory sticks in before
you add the V5

SweetJesusJosephandMary!   I'm glad I chickened out and tried to
get the system back up before housecleaning and re-installing windows.
install vid drivers..."can't find xx.file", reinstall sound drivers, "can't
find xx.file"
add all those fancy pci bridge and goofball Via drivers,"missing file"
unbeivable

ps..currently running at 52 or 53c.  What is the temperature limit?  I
think
on my old p3 motherboard it would sound a beeping warning if it got up
to 70 degrees celcius.

My T-Bird runs at up to 56c, but I think a "stock" T-Bird or Duron will
run at anything between 45 and 55c depending on the cooler, it runs a
fair bit hotter than your average P3
