What are/were GP3 expectations for people

I havent got the warez version, and im gonna wait till friday but i
wanna know what everyones expectations are or were for those whove
played it.
It seems that most of the posts are instead of real flaming gp3, more
dissapointed about it really.
Was everyone expecting some super human game??

i am expecting to see the best f1 game ever created, and i think i
will see that.
I was a huge fan of GP2, got most of the addons, and plaeyd it to
death for about 2 1/2 years.  I got GPL, didnt play it much, thought
it was too hard, but now i love it, and i think it  is a fantastic
game.  Ive got OF1R, and i think it is the worst piece of shit ever.
I didnt bother with f1200 cos of the reviews here.

I think weather, better graphics, better AI is worth it.  I dunno what
else you can possibly add to it.  GP2 was the best at its time, GP3
surely will be the best game of its time.  There isnt much to add to
gp2 than weather, the different/updated tracks/drivers, and 3d
graphics.  I just dont understand what everyone else was expecting.
Please write what your expectations are or were, and where you think
they went wrong.

GP1 and GP2 were far ahead of their time, though mildly flawed in certain
ways, just like GPL.  I expected GP3 to be ahead of its time, too.

Instead, GP3 is a slightly improved GP2.  It is a toss-up, e.g., whether in
an overall sense it is better or worse than F12000.  Therefore it is not a
"bad" game, but it is not the leap ahead many of us were hoping for.  It is
also not a "must buy" as I had expected, unless you don't already own a
modern F1 title.

Marc.

They certainly were not expecting GP2.5 with all of the same
faults in GP2 apparently carried over. It seems like GP3 is
simply GP2 ported to W98 and weather effects added.

OK.

Me too.

Well if you have a CPU that is a P3-600 or better, you should
reconsider. But hey try GP3 first.

Something i noticed in GP3 on weather related features. I was just
sitting on the track watching something else when all of sudden the sky
turned grey and then rain sprinkles and finally a downpour just started
out of nowhere.. now that is realism

What are/were GP3 expectations for people

by Jeff Vince » Mon, 24 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Not a flame for you Macca, but since you asked...

   Almost.

I certainly think we were expecting lot more from the four year
wait from GP2 to GP3.  It sounds more like a super-generous-patch or
an almost-worth-it-new-release that could have been offered a year
after GP2 was released (much like GP4, GP5, etc will be).

That same mentality is what gets Papyrus flamed here for offering
N3 (and NR99 and N2) based on the same (N1) physics engine.  Four-five
year old technology just isn't good enough, not when the competition
is striving to improve the state of the art.

So Geoff took four years to add weather and 3D to GP2.  Wow.
Compare that to what David Kaemmer did in '96 - '98, creating GPL more
or less from scratch.  Yeah, we sure as heck expected more from the
sim god Geoffrey.

As far as the feature set, how about viable online racing?  That's
where its at for many of us.  Other sims can do it, why not GP3?
Couldn't be that old, "good enough" code, now could it?  ;)

Or how about fixing the game engine so it doesn't go into
slow-motion when the CPU is overtaxed?  That was a known problem with
GP2, and its still there.

No doubt Geoff wasn't working on this for the full four years.
Probably Hasbro figured it was a minimal investment to spruce up GP2,
release it as GP3, and expect big sales based on the reputation of its
predecessors and its creator.  That's business, but its hardly a
passion for the sport or striving to new achievements.  Whether
Geoffrey just couldn't get the backing to do a better GP3 or just
doesn't care any more, only he knows.

I guess the bottom line is "good enough" just isn't good enough any
more.

"But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was
nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

"They" wanted GPL98. GP3 had to be GPL98 or it would be considered crap. There's
nothing more to say. GP3 is great for those who knew what to expect and who
accepted that.

My expectation was an up-to-date physical simulation of a race
car.  The graphics, weather, AI, and everything else could
have been the same as GP2, as far as I'm concerned, and I'd
have been happy.  GP3 is not an up-to-date physical simulation
of a race car.

"I" wanted something on par with Viper racing, F1 2000, or
even GPL (I wish), in terms of the vehicle simulation.

The GP3 physics model is a kludge that was outdated three
years ago.  I've listed the deficiencies in other posts.

GP3 is great in a lot of ways, but it falls flat in the
most important category.

errrr GP3 is great for those that didn't expect much but new window
dressing and implentation of missing features....

Does that disagree with anything I said?  :-)

And that's really hard to accept for Papy customers, isn't it?

Well, I for one (yes a Papy customer) opted out of buying every product
that was just a new dressed up release.  I have basically stuck with the
new cutting edge releases (with a few add on packs ala Indianapolis for
ICR2)...
