Full Vehicle Testing

by Stephen Di Sca » Tue, 18 Oct 1994 08:35:08

I am a junior at Cornell University working on the Hybrid Electric Vehicle
Team.  We design and build an electric vehicle each year.  This year we
would like to add Full Vehicle Testing to our project, and I thought I
would turn to the net for advice.

In a nutshell, I am looking for any information about road testing of cars
for measuring things like aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance of
various tires.  Any and all information - including pointers to
periodicals, www sites and/or ftp sites - would be greatly appreciated.
We would like to start testing last year's car ASAP in order to improve
this year's car.  Plus, I need to compile my research by next Thursday,
the 27!  :)

Also, if anyone is interested in knowing more about the team in general,
feel free to drop me a line!  I've posted before and have recieved a few
notes from people who were interested - I apologize for not replying in so
long.  I will make every effort to reply to those messages.  Thanks in
advance,

David Za

You might be interested in the project Chrysler has been working on.
They will be racing a hybrid electric vehicle this year, I believe. I
think it's called Patriot? Anyway, if you want info on it, send me
e-mail.

Personally, I think hybrid is the future of city cars. They seem much
more suitable to the stop and go driving than gasoline-powered cars do.

your university used to be affiliated with Cornell Aeronautical Lab
in Buffalo, NY. They were the premier automotive research and testing
facility. They have a wind tunnel, full-scale testing facility, and
TIRF, a tire testing machine, among things of interest to your project.

They've been sold and are now known as Calspan/Arvin Industries.

You might do a bit of digging in your library database and look for
such buzzwords as TIRF,CAL, Calspan.
If that doesn't work try aerodynamics, tire testing, etc. and look
for NHTSA & FHWA contracts to Calspan and/or CAL and you'll find a
gold mine.

greetings:
you might look into a 5th wheel (for hp/drag/rolldown/...).  also, there
have been reports of using a radar gun and an accurate timebase to do
numerical calculus to get info on the above stats....

later,
