A potentially stupid steering wheel question

by Craig Jon » Fri, 30 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Seeing as I currently only play GPL and GP2, and have no inclination of
buying or playing anything else in the near future, should I not bother with
FF and buy an Actlabs RS, as opposed to the FF version?

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I assume that other than the Force Feedback,
both wheels have the same build quality/upgrade options etc.

Id particularly like to hear from happy GPL and GP2 playing RS owners, if
there are any!

Thanks guys,

Craig

p.s. How DO you add nospam (or whatever) to your e-mail add??!!

A potentially stupid steering wheel question

FWIW, I have daily access to a variety of driving controllers,
including a Saitek R4 Force wheel, and I always find myself
gravitating towards the non-Force Feedback wheels.  The Saitek wheel
is a very nice piece of work -- its smooth digital output makes it a
very precise controller to drive with, and I acutally like the pedals;
its FF implementation in sims like Viper Racing is very good, too, but
overall, I tend to prefer the precision I get from a good non-FF
controller even over the Saitek wheel (despite it's digitial signal
output).

My ACT Labs RS (non-FF) wheel hasn't arrived yet, so I can't give you
any feedback on that, but for me, the bottom line is that I've found
that I prefer a good non-FF wheel over a FF device most of the time.
I know others disagree, and maybe I'm just jaded, but although FF is
nice, it's not a must-have for me.  Plus, if you're interested
primarily in games that don't support FF, why pay for something you're
not going to use?  Viper Racing is my game of choice now -- and it has
some of the best FF implementation so far, but as I said, I still find
myself using the non-FF wheels more often, even for Viper Racing.

Hope this helps.  Good luck!

I use an ACT Labs RS wheel almost exclusively, and love it!  It's
especially good if you get the PDPI L4/ACT Labs RS bundle. I
don't know of another wheel available that has the programmability
of the RS.

I also have the Force RS and like it a lot in Viper and other
sims.  Since until recently, the auto-centering of the Force
RS didn't work with GPL, I haven't been using it.  Now that
the new drivers support GPL auto-centering, I need to download
them and try it.

If all you are playing is GPL and GP2, I'd suggest going with
the RS wheel, or if you are really serious, the PDPI/RS bundle.
I've found, though, that I get the most out of GPL when I use
my home-built pedals with the RS wheel.

My RS will be a PDPI/RS bundle with the PDPI RS cartridge -- I can't
wait! <G>

Hey not only do the new Force RS drivers allow the auto centering to work in
GPL, but it also allows dual axis support!!! Whoo hoo go ACT LABS!!!

But to answer your question, I have a Act Labs Force RS and play GPL and
friends, and I have no complaints. As to whether you should get the RS or
Force RS, if you have the money, I'd go with the Force RS because its not
that much more and you will love it once you use it. I personally find
Non-Force games a little stale when compared to a game that has Force
feedback, but that's just me. Anyway, point is, I love my wheel, haven't had
any problems with it and it works great. It may not be comparable to the
$5000 racing systems out there, but then again, it only costs $139.00.
personally, I find it hard to believe that its worth the extara $4861.00 for
those***pit setups but I guess I'm just not "hard-core" enough huh? Hope
your happy with whatever you chose :-)

Craig,

There was no reply to your antispam-question yet.
1. Make sure that your real email-address doesn't occur in your posts,
I guess, that's the most important thing. Robots are running through
the NG's and reading all the text searching for email-addresses. What
I don't know for sure, whether this robots also can read out the
posters email-address (anybody knows?). For this case:

2. go to options of your news-reader and change your email-address by
adding something or so. Don't forget to explain in your Signature, how
to alter the address to reply to you by email. (my new ISP allows
posting only with the correct address, so I cannot do this)

3. post your things over hotmail, deja, ... and don't care about the
spam. Just put an hint for your 2nd email-address into your posts.

Hope this helps

Jens

BTW: I own a Logitech FF and love it, also for GPL
