if the nascar guys want to start their own newsgroup that's fine. but
only they will split off. we don't all need to divide into seperate
groups. besides i don't see any real reason for a split

: that's funny, i don't see any reason NOT to split. it's no more
: difficult to follow two newsgroups than one. how can you not see any
: real reason to split? if someone just wants information about NASCAR,
: they have to wade through a jillion "when-the-****-is-GP2-going-
: to-be-released" messages, etc. Seems like plenty enough real reason to
: me...

If that is you only reason for wanting a split GP2 is released and that
should not be a problem any longer.

I cannot think of a reason why it should be split.  There just are not
enough different serious sims (4) out there to justify it.

well, that isn't the only reason, which is why i put the "etc." after
the example i used.

dozens and dozens of games out there have their own groups. why not?
don't get me wrong, i don't think that the general group should cease
to exist, and that there should be 4 new groups. but, if x-wing, and
quake, and marathon and others can have their own groups why couldn't
gp2 or nascar? seems to me it would suit the folks who aren't
interested in stock car sims, and are big fans of gp2, as an example.

Well,
I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I would rather see the newsgroup
not split up.  Where I work they have a firewall setup that only allows us
access to a limited number of newsgroups.  If the group were to split up it is
not likely that I would be able to get the new group.  I don't know this to be
a fact but I do know that the access I have to newsgroups is VERY limited.  I'm
actually kind of surprised I get this one.

Just my humble opinion...

Steve, could this have to do with GP2 being released by another software
house other than Papy? ;-)  Sorry, no flaming intended, it was just
too easy, I couldn't pass it up.

I will agree that at the moment the GP2 frenzy has taken hold of our
community.  But I also remember this being the case with NASCAR, ICR2,
and especially HAWAII.  Now 3 out of 4 can't be that bad?

However, this is just the nature of the beast.  I will agree that at the
present moment, it is a little hard to navigate this newsgroup with all
of the GP2 chatter.  But, it's sorta like living in the Northwest.  We
have our moments of RAIN, but then we have more moments of wonderful
weather.  And the people can't be beat.  Am I going to leave the
Northwest cuz of some rain.  Nope, cuz I enjoy the rich forests that
are produced by the rain, and the people are still wonderful.  That's
sorta the way I feel about R.A.S.  It gets a little rainy at times and
sure there are a few ***s once 'n awhile.  But, in the long run I
appreciate the diversity created by the "rain", and most of the people
here are still wonderful!

The problem is not so much dealing with an onslaught of GP2 messages
due to the release of the game, it's due to all the messages which
leave no clue as to which simulation the article is written about.
THESE are the ones that are a pain in my side.  The only choice, other
than deleting all articles that don't provide this key info, is to
open up EACH AND EVERY ARTICLE that falls under this description, just
to see if it's anything someone may be interested in.  The only people
this wouldn't be a problem for are the ones that own every driving
simulation imaginable.  What about the rest?

<...>

The real killer for me was when Hawaii started, and there were 50
indecipherable subject threads to do with "look out for so-and-so." I
definitely wanted a split then...

But I do like having it all together when things are normal. If we
were at all managable, we could do something like everything to do
with GP2 start the subject thread "GP2: <...>", all NASCAR "NASCAR:
<...>", ICR2 as "ICR2: <...>", etcetera. Then everything would be sort
of categorized alphabetically.

This thread would be under "General: don't split newsgroups"

Damn! Forgot about the little "re:", though! Screws the whole thing
up. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
