Nascar Heat: what da dilly-o?

by Jimmy Spark » Mon, 05 Nov 2001 11:26:16

I'm just curious, is there something unique about Nascar Heat that causes
people to play it instead of Nascar4?  I mean, other than the fact of not
possibly wanting to purchase another game, why are addons, etc. still being
made?  I ask, only because I'm curious if I'm missing something good, hehe.

If there have been some landmark changes, updates, patches, addons, etc.
since the first of this year, could someone kindly let me know what they
are, or please provide me with a url to the action?

Thanks in advance

Nascar Heat is not that bad...in fact...with the exception of N4 it is the
best online racing available.  The AI behave somewhat now...and the real
reason is...after the 3rd patch, you can load up any number of mods that run
transparently in NH.  So you can run many of the cars from the Le Mans
series, or the IRL cars, or 70's Nascar Winged cars, or super modified oval
racers, or pickups or or or or...
The BIG mode for road racers is the DTM(German Touring Cars)  V8 powered
rear drive Sedans by Mercedes, Opal, & Alfa Romeo's.  The framework of Heat
is very conducive to making physic changes so the DTM cars drive way
differently than the big lumbering Winston Cup cars.
Keep in Mind, this kind of flexibility is NOT possible with the Papyrus
sims.  N4 is clearly superior in driving/racing aspects, but it just can't
match the sheer number of additions you get with NH.  Buy one sim..get a
dozen more free.  There are currently about 7 add-on road courses with a few
more in the works.

  "The following is IMO"  :)

Actually, in terms of stock car racing, more people are playing N4.
Heat's mods are it's main calling card now, and for good reason; they're
incredible.

In terms of the stock car racing aspect, Heat is better in some areas than
N4, and much worse in others.  It has a much better stock car "feel"; you
can sense the mass involved.  N4 can be like driving a hovercraft :)
Heat has better graphics, including track.  Unfortunately, Heat's online
aspect is basically non-existent for anything other than short sprints for
various reasons, the main one being there are no yellow flags possible.
It's AI racing is the same; AI cars rarely, if ever, cause a caution.
There are cautions at times, but review will almost always show nothing
physically caused them, just a code trip........and they consistently occur
around the pit windows for the AI cars :)

Heat simulates a single stock car better, but N4 simulates a stock car
race better.  Having said that, I rarely race AI, and haven't run Heat in
months.

The way to choose between Heat and N4 all depends on the way you play your
games. If you are a offline player then go for Heat as the AI is much
better. On the other hand if you are into online racing then N4 is the way
to go do to Heats lack of yellows. The latest patch has seemed to helped the
AI in N4, but I still think Heat's is better. The Craftsman Truck add-on is
killer for offline play.

How many N4 online 'open' races run with yellows...?

True, but the lack of Heat yellows pertains to league play, not really the
Sierra pickup wreckfests :)  To be honest, if Heat had online yellows that
worked(the offline ones don't either actually), and possibility of having
longer races than a few percent length, I'd be playing it over N4 online.

One thing they both have in common; the damage model stinks for both :)

uuummmm.........none, but then I really don't play N4 or Heat that much. I
think its more of my dwindling interest in NASCAR than anything. I'm a short
track guy and all these damn 1.5 mile tri/quad ovals just have killed it for
me.

So you prefer Martinsville or NHIS over C***te or Texas?  I like them all -
I don't think I favor one over the other.  I'd want a LOT more practice at
either before I venture online.

I like Texas, but I'm not fond of Lowes. Actually all the tracks I really
liked never made it past N3: Nashville (not the new one), I-70, Portland
oval, Evergreen, etc.  Can you tell I like short tracks? :)  As far as N4
goes I'm not really sure what tracks I like. I'm just getting back into N4.
I put it on the shelf after the wall riding "fix" of the 1.1 patch. I use to
do ok at Phoenix before the patch, but now I can't get through the dog leg
to save my ass.  Oh well I never claimed to be any good. :)

I haven't ventured online for NH, and very LITTLE for N4.  I still had a
dial-up until just recently.  So I honestly can't speak for the damage model.
For some reason, neither Nascar title grabs me like N2 and N3 did.  Maybe I'll
try it next weekend.

The last WC race at Nashville was '83 IIRC.  IMO, it is THE perfect stock
car track. It was had banking steeper than Bristol, lol.
Many of past and present drivers cut their teeth on it.

Forgot to add; the steep banking lasted a _very_ short time, in the 60's I
think :)
