I have recently installed Windows XP Home and ever since have not been able
to run windows more than just a few minutes without the system locking up.
The only thing I can find through web searches for this is either a bad
Power Supply or motherboard not being compatible. I am going to get both
this week, but was wondering what would be the best mother board for the
following components:

AMD Athlon 1 ghz processor
648 mb SDRAM
GeForce 3 Ti 500
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Linksys Network Card
2 Western Digital Hard Drives
CDRW Drive and a Floppy

All help and advice much appreciated

Remove all stuff from MB except ram, vid card and one boot HD. Add one
more component at a time and see which one causes lockups.

any of the newer Nforce2 motherboards seem to be a good choice.  You can
look at just about any of the major amd brands like Abit, Asus, MSI, and
others and get roughly the same products, just price and some odd features
are different.
Also since it runs, but only for a short while, have you experiemented
with heat issues?  Try removing the side of the case and pointing a big
desk fan right at the cpu.

Had the exact same problem it sounds like you're having. Spent some good
cash buying new this's and that's, finally gave the comp away and bought
a new one. The friend I gave the comp to spent less than $20.00 for a
new fan and he now has virually a new comp.

Just a thought.

1) You didn't mention what brand of motherboard you're using, nor
whether or not any of the hardware is new to the system.

2) Was the system working before you installed XP, or is this a
completely new system?

3) If it was a previously working before you installed XP, did you
"upgrade" from a previous (old) version of Windows, or was it a
*** format/install?

If you're dealing with new hardware:

A) Make double-damn sure the heatsink is installed *correctly* on the
CPU.  Heat buildup will cause problems.

B) AMD CPU's require 300W (or better) name-brand PSU's. Get an
Enermax if you're convinced it's the power supply.

C) Make sure that there aren't ANY cards in the PCI slot immediately
adjacent to the video card.  XP uses ACPI, and that can aggravate IRQ
sharing issues.

D) Remove everything except the drives, the, video card, and ONE
stick of RAM. Reformat your hard drive, and re-install XP.  Then, add
the memory back one stick at a time.  If the system still appears to
work, re-insert the sound card, and then then ethernet card.

If you're NOT dealing with all new hardware, it might simply be that
XP doesn't like something in your system (and probably only when it's
installed in your system).  If you followed the step "D" stuff and it
still doesn't work, you should be able to easily identify the
offending hardware.

I had a similar problem a year or so ago and it turned out to be a dodgy
stick of RAM. Try a single stick and do some testing.  Let us know if you
manage to resolve it.

Best of luck!

Before shelling out cash, look at cooling. I would suspect that the load on
your processor has increased with XP and early AMD chips were notorius for
overheating. Upgrade your processor fan and make sure you have good contact
with heat conducting resin goop. make sure there is good ventilation around
your PC also.

Well. From my experience. There's your 1wst problem.  AMD is/was the
biggest piece of shit processor i ever had the misfortune to own.
Every game i ran would crash after a few min. Stuck a intel in and
been going great since.

Amen Ed.  Been there, done that.

AMD may be fine now but...

Here is an easy test to discover if you have an improperly cooled chip.
Take off the side cover, start your system.  Point a large desk or box fan
at the exposed cpu.   If you can continue computing past the normal lockup
time, then you have either NOT got a good enough heat sink or it is
installed poorly.

First off, replace the CPU if you can. That is the worst AMD processor ever
made. It doesn't like many types of memory, and just has many other
problems. I've got an 2200+ right now and haven't had a problem with it,
though you probalby don't want/need something that fast.

Heh. That is how mine run every day. 6 inch turbo fan sitting by the
open side panel. Keeps the room a nice warm temp all year.
