OT: car handling question

by Tim Vanhe » Sun, 09 Jul 2000 04:00:00

I've got my Subaru Impreza GT turbo this week. It's a AWD car with 50% of
the torque on it's front wheels and 50 on the rear. Before I drove it I
thought that it would feel more like a FWD car than a RWD, because when you
floor it weight is transferred the back end and front wheels will loose grip
first.
It doesn't. when I try to make wheels spin (not an easy thing to do. Boy,
that car has lots of grip) the rear wheel tend to spin first giving me the
oversteer feel of a RWD car.
Can anybody explain this? I love it, but it's dangerous, especially when
coming out of a slow corner: there is not much power available under
2500rpm, so when you floor it you get away slowly until the turbo kicks in
at 2500rpm, then the rear end can break loose.

Hi Tim,

As far as I know the power on the front/rear with an Impreza is 40/60 or so
,not 50/50. (I don't think any awd roadcar has a 50/50 split between power)
so that should explain the rwd feeling.
BTW I really envy you, I can only dream of driving my own Impreza......

As far as I know, Subaru's AWD system puts as much as 95% of the power to
the front wheels at all times unless it is needed, and only then will it
shift power to the rear wheels, and only 45% of it at maximum.

Nice car, BTW.  They won't even let us have them here in the USA (yet)

They flatter a drivers skills aparantly.  The police use them as persuit
viehicles, but before they aquired WRX's (Australian version of GT)
criminals (a lot of them ram-raiders) evaded police in over 100 chases in 2
years.  The times the police caught the Subaru's was when they crashed, and
this was only once or twice from memory.  Nice car, but they're everywhere
now =O

It is the way the diffs in the car are set up, it is supposed to feel
like a fwd car, but if you floor it , it ?ssumes you want to have fun
and turns into a 4/rwd car, the skyline does this aswell (all 4wd cars
do)

The torque split is more like 60 rear, 40 front.

Not dangerous. Consider a high performance driving course that will
teach you how to handle the car properly.

You should definitely consider the course. One thing it'll teach you
is to anticipate the turbo boooooooooossssssssstttttttt! <g>
Seriously, if this is your first go at a turbo-nutter-bastard motor,
then get an expert to show you how to really appreciate it.

Actually i think (depending on the model) that the centre diff varies
torque split according to the available grip.
