rec.autos.simulators split? Great idea!

I think the R.A.S.  split-up is a great idea,  you all may not agree.  About all of
you know how much you are annoyed by all the bastards in the group,  especially the one

"Looks like Nascar2 won't be released until October 1997.  Sorry Folks.

It may also tick people off by the sudden uproar of Microprose's GP2.  That sim
gets more attention/posts than anything in the group.  I see the same posts
all over and over again.  For example,  you'll see:

"Why isn't GP2 released in US?"
"It's released in Germany,  why not here?"
"It's released in Brazil!"
"UK gets GP2!"
"Why hasn't GP2 been released on the planet Mars?"
"I got latest setups for GP2!"
"Cheat code to race on the planet Uranus for GP2!"

Now people,  don't you think we need to make a specially designed newsgroup for these
people? (rec.autos.simulators.gp)
Come on,   don't you hate it when you see thousands of GP posts that have practically
no meaning,  and it takes you forever to find at least one NASCAR/ICR 2 topic?  That
has to drive you nuts.
I'm not saying GP people are stupid,  I'm saying that there's too many GP posts!
So that's why we need a new group.

For all of those people who keep saying "No,  please don't split the newsgroup,  I'm
begging you!"  Take a look at my opinion,  and see what you think.

See you at the tracks,
Mark Fields

You are absolutely right, but, the only way to stop it is by praying!  =)

You have a good point.  I'm seeing now what you mean.  The only GP posts that drive me
and many others nuts are those "It's release here....." and "Where in the world is it?"
posts.

I'm also glad that we can talk camly about it.

As some other people have pointed out, I don't see how splitting the group
will stop another idiot from posting another fake post on the new Nascar
group? unless the new nascar group will be moderated there will be nothing
you can do to stop it.

[SNIP!]

Again, this is because GP2 is just now coming out, there were similar
posts when Nascar came out, when ICR2 came out and especially when hawaii
became available, I don't have to remind people how many posts there were
about hawaii driving ettiquette and don't race with such and such, hes an
a**hole etc. also fresh in my mind is also all the posts about seeing the
king driving on a Nascar Daytona on RPM2 etc. This is just a normal part
of a USENET newsgroup, I'm sure soon we will see lots of posts about Nascar2
as soon as it begins to release.

I disagree, that is what threads are for, if you don't like a thread then
don't read it, ignore it and go on, look on the next page and see if there
are threads that interest you there...
no one said you had to read every single thread that gets posted here every
day. It seems that not too much is being posted about nascar lately, maybe
because nothing new going on with it.

Thanks for posting your thoughts on this, although I disagree with you, I
am glad that we can discuss this calmly, and I am still waiting to see a
justified reason which will sway my opinion and make me support the split.

Cheers.

>Good point, way too many, "When is GP2 going to be released in the

US?"

There is also too many of these "Split the newsgroups" posts. If these
alond would stop, the traffic on the group would be cut in half!!

LET IT GO.

A simpler way - get a newsgroup with Kill Files. Mine has "NASCAR" and
"Hawaii" in it, so nothing about these things bother me - "GP2" and
"F1GP2" would probably do the same job for you.

:For all of those people who keep saying "No,  please don't split the newsgroup,  I'm

But I agree in principle - r.a.s.nascar, .indy, and .f1 for the three
main sports (but F1 would cover GP2 and Sony's F1, for instance), and
maybe a fourth ".misc" group for all other motor sports.

Although the danger with a .misc group is that everyone cross-posts
the correct group and .misc, just in case.

>Good point, way too many, "When is GP2 going to be released in the US?"

And how long do you think you will be seeing these posts, as GP2
is now out worldwide and the first enthusiasm dies quite quickly
off ?  Each newsgroup has these periods where some subject floods
and spills all over the place. And then these bursts are followed
by requests of splitting the newsgroup. And then after a week or
two things return to normal again.

I'd really like to know how much 'real' traffic there is in
r.a.s.: discard all GP2 announcements, all the split-this-group-
now postings, and the derivatives, and count how many icr,
nascar, hawaii (these are different things, at least from an
Europeans view), f1gp, and arcade postings with real content we
have had during the last week/month. Not too many, I think, not
enough to warrant a splitting. If you narrow a group's subject
matter too much, the group will slowly die. The mere existence of
a group does not mean there will be more postings, it is you and
me, the readers, who give the group its contents.
IMO, a group with about 100-200 posts a day is not too big. Check
out the other usenet news hierarchies, there are some HUGE groups
around.
And learn to use those threads and kill files, they will ease
your net life  tremendously.

File this under 'no real content'. Just had to vent out some
steam.

Yup, couldn't have said it better myself.  Nothing against GPers but I am
really sick of sifting thru you repetitive posts to find some good Nascar/ICR
stuff.  Besides you guys throwing money away for F1GP2 what did you expect to
get after the long release time, a bug free totally different game from the
first one?  Ha!!!  Looks like F1GP-1 with some eye candy, couldn't even
get the front freaking wheels in the second game....what a joke!

rec.autos.simulators split? Great idea!

Do people really feel it's time to split r.a.s? Or is it just that
the release of GP2 has caused a rush to post, the effect of which is
that non-GP2 people are feeling lost? If that is the case, then there is
probably no need to split r.a.s., killfiles will do everything for you.

Back when I got the idea for r.a.s., I had considered a hierarchy of
groups. Such a hierarchy could be based on, for example, the approach to
simulators (playing versus, creating, etc.), or on class of simulator
(sport (f1, nascar, indy, rally), arcade, etc). About the worst way of
creating a hierarchy would be by game, since games have a limited life
and are not guaranteed to be the "only" or "best" simulator for a
particular sport.

So, if people really do want to split r.a.s, consider how best to split
for future as well as present needs.
