I would like to thank the academy... uh, anyway. I'm not really sure how
long it took to get the negative rank. I got GPL at the end of 1999 and
hotlapped for a while, but there was a long driving break during spring
and summer. Then I suddenly got involved in a league, tried out VROC and
you know the rest :) My first GPLRank entry is +109.22 from 26th
November 2000.

The end of the year was pretty good GPL-wise. There was a lot of time to
practice during the holidays, and I shaved about 7 secs off my Ring
record the day after Eldred's GP From Hell. At some point I suddenly got
a Zen-like flash of understanding on how to enter corners (mainly
turning in earlier and getting closer to the inside), which helped a
lot.

Big thanks go to the GPL Replay Analyzer team. The time difference graph
and real-time plots are wonderful for discovering bad lines. Maxx's
GPLEGS files are also dead on... I wish I had read them earlier.

My Spa, Kyalami and Ring times still aren't negative, Spa being the
hardest for me. Based on other tracks I think Kyalami will be easy if I
try it with Lotus. After these three, Papyrus Benchmark is no longer on
my buddy list. :)

Now I can concentrate on the beginning league season and... Honda. Ugh.
Anybody have good tips on how to make this thing go fast? :P

That's unusual, actually. Try thinking of Spa as a longer and faster
version of Mosport - the tracks share the same characteristics of long,
sweeping curves and blind summits. I did this in reverse (because I found
Spa one of the easiest tracks, but Mosport much harder), and it worked
well.

It is getting funny;>  I have also found Spa the hardest track for me.
I always felt that those unnecessarily long straight are intended to
make me impatient. And (of course:>) I have found Mosport much
easier. Even if I mess up a corner I exit it slower, gain less speed
before the next corner, brake at my usual point (where I am usually
outbrake myself) but this time it is just perfect because I am
going a bit slowly.

I have the same feeling. I've always found Spa a bit boring and
frustrating. It was incredibly hard to drop even one second off the
record.

Did some Honda/Mosport practice yesterday. Every time I tweaked the
setup and drove another 4-7 laps, the lap times would gradually drop
from 1:25.xx to 1:24.0x (or 1:23 on lucky laps) and then I'd crash :)
I'll have to stop pushing it too far. The car is getting there, though -
I took Alison's setup, loosened it a bit and adjusted the gears.

Thanks.

Same here. The shortness of the Mosport track makes it easier for me to
learn and get into a rhythm than Spa.

I need those long straights for my slow brain to get itself prepared for the
next corner. I never have the car settled at Mosport or Zandvoort, and as
for Monaco...

Completely opposite to me. Spa is, in a word, hypnotic. It really makes
me focus my mind on every corner exit, but Mosport is like wading in
a tar-filled swimming pool wearing snow shoes.

Interesting simile... have you been taking mind-expanding *** or is the

Blame Canada. .)

Sometimes, but not when we're indoors wrecking Ferraris.

Spa is long periods of boredom interspersed with moments of abject terror... :)

It is a new interpretation of an old saying....concering war.  Replace
Spa with war and you have the original message.(possibly air combat in
paticular)

It's borrowed and changed - I *think* it had something to do with the
millitary...patrols, or something like that.
It works for Spa though, dunnit? <g>
