GPL: a little race report

Last night on-line at Monza was like a little piece of reality (as far as I
know, having never driven a real race car :)

With about 5 laps to go I was being caught (quickly) by Reno Raines. He was
2-3 seconds a lap faster than me, must have spun earlier on. He got a great
exit out of Lesmos and was on my right rear tire (invisible but I could hear
him) as we approached Ascari.

I was near the left of the track anticipating an outside pass so I had to
lift for Ascari to avoid sliding in front of him. However, he was
anticipating me sliding wide so went inside instead. By the time I saw him
in my mirrors it was too late - he tapped me and I was in the Armco.

So far this probably sounds like I'm whining but in fact it was great - it
goes to show how realistic this "game" is. I can see exactly the same thing
happening in real life - two drivers both trying to anticipate the other's
move and avoid taking him out while still trying to lose as little time as
possible. We both guessed wrong and I lost, "that's racing".

Anybody who doesn't think racing is a thinking person's game wasn't in my
head last night (or RR's).

Thats the spirit... a lot of people get pissed off when they are knocked off
the track, it's good to see someone taking it as part of the fun as it
should be.

yeah it is a ton of fun when people try to go 3 wide into turn one and end
up taking out half the field.  It is all fun since...well I havn't figured
out the positive side of getting taken out in turn 1...except you know one
more person that you can't race side by side with later on in life.

The "FUN!"  comes from bearing down and trying to move back through
the field.  Each pass becomes a triumph.  Sure the race leaders may be long
gone, but even if there is one guy back there with you...you have a race...
Now a couple bits of advice from a perenial backmarker...
Don't alter your line to let him pass, he'll find his own way...
        and to the passer...
patience!   Trying to whiz by someone who is much slower than you is
inviting disaster if you attempt it at a turn.  Most of us Snails don't have
the car control
the speed merchants have...pause a moment, get a good launch from a corner
and use the straight.
you may now return to your regularly scheduled discussion.

It depends on the situation.  I've had incidents with people I was closely
racing with - just one of them racing deals.  But those are outweighed by the
people who can't control the car enough to go straight, or who run into you on
purpose.  I don't know about YOU, but that's not fun to ME...

hehe, It's terrible when someone takes you out deciding to run backwards
around the track but if two drivers with an idea of what their doing and the
intention to race touch then no harm, it should be taken as part of it, some
get very annoyed and angry about a mistake,
intentional first corner crashes and running backwards isn't fun at all.
