Can you play Need For Speed 3 on a small LAN with only one CD? Or do I
have to make my 10 year old buy his own copy?

One CD is all you need. Just use a remote install on the second computer.

When you install the game you are offered a "remote install"
specifically to enable multiple installations for LAN play.

However, if you install the full game on two computers, you will find
it impossible to play multiplayer since both copies require the CD to
be in the drive.

Seems fair to me.
