I have a couple questions...

1. Sometimes when I get into GPL the sound starts to grind when I get into
the upper rpm's.  This does not happen all the time.  I have an Asus
CUSL2-C, P3 800mhz, 500mb PC133, SBLive Value, Radeon 64 DDR Vivo.  I've
updated all the drivers to their latest APPROVED revisions per the
manufacturers; no betas.  Any idea on the sound issue; oh I'm running the
Direct3d7 accelerator although I don't think that would cause the problem?

2. I've tried the OpenGL accelerator and found it to take a frame rate hit
compared to the Direct3d7 accelerator.  Is anyone using OpenGL over DirectX
that has a Radeon card?

3. I'd like to get into online racing with GPL and am wondering about VROC.
Is this a Windows program because back when I was racing GPL you had to load
Netscape to use it (I know...I've hibernated for a while, got married,
etc... but I'm back).

4. Should I load that GPL Disconnect Fix?  I'm running over broadband.

5. Is rec.autos.simulators the best newsgroup for Papyrus's sims?  Back when
I was following some guy hosted a newsgroup server from his house.

Your SB Live is the problem here. Run dxdiag, go to the sound page and move
the hardware accelleration level down to basic (one above none). You could
also try different drivers, but ymmv with those.

Go to http://www.vroc.net/ and get winvroc (and the IP patch). Congrats on
persuading someone to make the coffee while you race ;-)

Apply the CPU patch, it includes the disco patch. You could also look for
the more cars patch if you have the bandwith.

Naturally ;-)
http://forum.racesimcentral.com/ is pretty good too.

No idea about the Ati card issues I use nVidia/3dfx but I'd just use
whichever works for you. D3D looks better imo but I use OpenGL to fix a few
glitches.

I've heard these possible fixes:

1. Turn down hardware acceleration for sound. (didn't work for me)
2. Remove the SBLive (did work for me)
3. Install a sound patch for GPL so you get 16bit sound files.

If the last one works, it's the most sensible thing to do.

What did you replace your SBLive with?

Can someone point me in the direction of a 16 bit sound patch?

There is one here called "GPLEA Engine Sound Pack v5.0"

I had onboard sound on the motherboard. I might try to put the SBLive back
in now that I have installed the sound patch.

I did some googleing for earlier threads here on RAS.

Thanks for your help.  I'll research some more offline but here are my
results.

- I tried the sound patch.  It didn't solve the problem.
- I reduced the acceleration of my SBLive Value to basic and I guess that
works but what effects does that have.  I have the SBLive for acceleration
so I'm defeating the purpose.
- It may be time for a sound card upgrade :-).
- It appears it's a bug with the drivers for XP as others are running fine
on Win9x.
