I've never really payed too much attention to qualifying for the Indy 500
but this year I get to go!  I'm totally into it now :)  The provisional grid
is already lined up but there are a number of fast drivers that have yet to
qualify including former F1 driver Johnny Herbert, Dario Franchitti, Paul
Tracey and Greg Ray.  Some bumping is definitely going to happen on Sunday!

Check out how I got my ticket - My buddy was on a layover at LAX and talking
with the woman sitting next to him.  She asked him if he was a race fan.  He
told her he was a big open wheel fan but the whole Tony George thing just
pissed him off the way Indy and Cart got split up.  She laughed - then told
him she was Tony George's sister!  She was on her way to her ranch in
Wyoming.  To make a long story short she hooked us up with renewable tickets
in the penthouse between the start finish line and turn one, passes to the
pits and the drivers meeting and tickets to the awards banquet the night
after the race!!!  I'm an instant Indy fan man!

It would be cool to see an F1 driver do good at the Indy 500.  I hope Johnny
Herbert makes the grid.  It'll give me someone to root for :)

Hi David,

amazing story, count yourself lucky! Enjoy the race, and if you
get to meet Johnny in the pits say hello to him. I have a
"fake" autographed postcard of him (got it as a "present" ;-),
it would be nice to get a *real* autograph to hang up next to
my *genuine* Jack Brabham autograph.

Cool story, and yes, I too hope Johnny makes the grid and does well in
the race, too bad he never really got a decent seat in F1

Was he the last F1 driver with an actual sense of humor ?

He was the coolest british F1 driver bar none.

I met him in the mid-nineties at a testing day at Silverstone.  I had only
the newest Autosport issue to hand, so he first read it, then read aloud:

  'Johnny Herbert was quoted as saying his car handled like a wheelbarrow'
(can't remember the exact words)

He chuckled, then announced 'I'll sign it where it says that'.

I still have the Autosport somewhere.  I guess it's worth a reasonable
amount.  It also has the signatures of Damon Hill, Ukyo Katayama, Mika
Hakkinen, David Coulthard, Oliver Panis and J J Lehto.  It would have had
Michael Schumacher's as well, had he not seen me coming and ran to the
safety of his Motorhome ;)
