thousands of files with similar names and extensions. I had probably 3 to
4 thousand files with file names like this: ca06.idx ctdf.idx etc.
Anybody have a clue where and what these little ***s are?

There are other index files as well. For example, older versions of
Netscape used .snm for it's mail folder indexes (and it's primary source
of netscape.exe crashes :) )
