NASAR Seeking Driver Inquiries Only

by Tom Pabs » Tue, 07 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Gentlemen and Ladies.....

The "National Association of Simulated Auto Racing" ("NASAR") is seeking
interested drivers for the "Western Region" competition series, pre-season -
starting in December 1999.

NASAR competition will incorporate both "closed wheel" (NASCAR 3, NASCAR Legends
and Motorsims CAN-AM/GT) and "open wheel" (Grand Prix Legends) events within a
single season (all "class" drivers will be required to have all of these sims
installed on their computers....as well as other sim programs that may be
designated from time to time by NASAR).  NASAR will sanction three (3)
Competition Class Divisions: Novice, Intermediate and Pro and driver licensing
will be required by the start of the full NASAR Series Season (March 2000).  The
NASAR sanctioned GCR (General Competition Rulebook) will govern all events.

This is an "interested parties" only request and covers only the NASAR Western
Region!

If you live in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, North/Central California (includes the
San Francisco and Silicon Valley trade areas) Western Canada or Australia
...........and would like to receive more information when it  becomes
available, then please do the following:

Send an email message containing this information exactly as formatted
below:

(Email program) Subject (box/header): NASAR Western Region
In the body of the email please provide:

                    Driver's First and Last Name
City and State (Country) of residence
                    Your "contact" email address

Email the above information exactly as shown to:

Please send only the information requested above at this time.

You will have an opportunity to ask questions and will get more information
about NASAR over the next month sent directly to you in email.  If you have
competed in any of the NASCAR Racing 2 leagues on TEN (Total Entertainment
Network) or in any of the GPL leagues on SpyBoy/VROC....you'll want to seriously
take a look at becoming a NASAR Series Competition Driver.

And if you've just started out in sim racing over the internet, the NASAR
"Novice" Driver Classification is specifically designed just for you!  Each
NASAR Competition Driver Classification will have multiple "run groups".....so
there's no need to worry about not being able to compete in NASAR.

Regards,

Tom Pabst
Chief Race Steward, NASAR Western Division

NASAR Seeking Driver Inquiries Only

by Tom Pabs » Tue, 07 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Well Michael......

Just hold on........watch for similar announcements (driver inquiries only) for:

    NASAR Regions to include:

Southwest Region, Midwest Region, Central Region, Southern Region,
Northeast Region and Southeast Region....all in addition to the Western Region.
Central European drivers will be incorporated in the Northeast and Southeast
Regions....while Australian drivers will run in the Western Region (time zones
are somewhat more compatible).

NASAR will use all of the current popular sim racing programs as
they become available (those listed are the current and "anticipated" ones
only)....as much as is practical in an online racing environment (which is more
up to the "developers" than it is to NASAR).  A truly unique feature of NASAR
will be the use of a different sim/track for each event.....never repeating two
in a row.  In addition, while the season schedule will be posted in advance of
the season....the event venue (sim and track) will be announced only "days"
before the actual race and when applicable, the "weather conditions" for the
race will be unknown until race time!   We want to showcase the "driver
abilities/racing skills" of our participants and minimize racing success just
because you have the ability to spend a zillion-hours developing (hacking out)
some "killer fast" setup that no one else can/will have.

All races will be full-length or near-full length and will bring success to sim
drivers who can make good decisions during a race, take advantage of situations
as they arise, keep a level (and patient) head under adversity....just like
real-world drivers and crew chiefs/teams must do every weekend.  These abilities
are gained more through "racing experience" and simply being "fast" will no
longer be a major factor in your ability to "win" on any given weekend.  And, in
deference to the families of our participants.....you won't have to spend hours
and hours "preparing a setup" for each event.  In fact, racing offline against
the AI  under varying weather and race conditions is going to do you far more
good than running "solo practice lap after lap" in the tedious process of
finding a killer fast setup.  To most of us, racing against the AI is a lot more
fun than working on setups......and will gain you a lot more "race experience"
than solo "setup" laps......especially when it has a REAL purpose!  Yet, having
the ability to adjust your setup to meet race conditions will be a "factor" in
all the races of course.......so the "setup gurus" certainly aren't going to be
penalized in any way with this race format.  We believe this will also encourage
participants to run in longer races in mid-week online practice on the "TEN's
and SpyBoy's" of the sim racing internet sites.  Five lap races at Monza or 20
lap races at Tally are probably not going to contain many NASAR participants on
a regular basis.  We believe encouraging "longer-realistic" races on the
internet "pickup" sites is good for sim racing in general.....and a lot more fun
over the long-haul for everyone!

While on the subject of NASAR sim racing features.....the use or affiliation of
Racing Teams will be limited to the "Pro Division" only.  Team or Driver
Sponsorship deals will be "open/unrestricted" in the "Pro Division" (and
proactively encouraged by NASAR rules and regulations governing the Pro
Division)........racing teams and sponsorships deals will have limiting
restrictions in the "Intermediate Division" and both will be unallowed in the
"Novice Division."

Our "reasoning" for this is simple really.......if you believe as we do, that
the "life***" of the future of sim racing becoming a full-fledged E-Sport is
the quality and quantity of the new sim drivers ("newbies") that join our ranks
every day, then the "reasons" for these restrictions become very clear.  We want
the "newbies" to feel they can spend their time practicing....and not have to be
looking for team or sponsorship affiliations as the only way to "make a name"
and move up in the sim racing ranks.  Just like in real racing, there's nearly a
vertical learning curve when you first start out in this "sport."  Learning the
"basic rules of the road" racing rules and driver on-track conduct, keeping your
equipment (computers and controllers) in top racing condition, negotiating
online internet connections and all the "technology" you must become familiar
with to keep that portion of your participation healthy......these all absorb
enormous amounts of time at first.  We want the new guys/gals to concentrate on
this formidable task when they first start out with us.  We want them to learn
that "getting the basics down first" is the fastest path they can take to the
"podium" finishes that will ultimately bring the sponsorship and team "offers"
anyway.  NASAR will spend a considerable portion of its resources working with
and promoting sim racing among the "newbies."  This will include online/offline
racing schools and training programs.....open to anyone who desires to
participate in internet sim racing........not just NASAR "Novice Division"
entrants.  In a way, we are going to make an environment for the "newbies" where
they'll feel like they are already a member of a race team.......a team made up
of all other newbies where they are encouraged to trade information, practice
together, help each other.....and with the guidance of the more advanced sim
drivers....obtain their "Novice Division" competition license and begin "moving
up" in the sim racing world.....if they so desire.  Or, they can just learn the
basics and make a career of "fun racing in the Novice Division," where things
will be a little more relaxed, where finishing a race and/or having no "race
incidents" will bring far more attention than finishing positions.  A place
where gaining experience has far more value than wins!
