N99: A Plea

N99: A Plea

by Andre Min » Fri, 14 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi All...

Agreed, my P233MMX is getting quite long in tooth... and also agreed
that N3 is probably niftier than my old N99 sim... BUT... ain't no way
this boy's gonna' be able to upgrade for some time... so stuck with N99
I am. Since that's the case... anybody have some help for:

The AI situation. Dover for example: I installed a Dover AI patch from
Nim's, and the racing is indeed better... but the starts are botched.
The cars come to a stop... and the yellow comes out. Everytime. Is there
a way to retain the good racing AI and fix the starts?  Or, has some
wonder individual "fixed" the AI problems in N99 for most/all tracks?

Bugs galore. The sim often crashes. Usually the frame freezes, but the
engine sound keeps reving until it's at a kazillion hz pitch. Weird. Any
patches available for any N99 applications?

Thanks for any help you can point me toward while I continue (trying) to
race N99 and hope for a new machine. One of these days...

Like Ed Bain says, you didn't mention the rest of your specs like the video
card, RAM, and DX version, but I'm running N3 on a P233MMX and get up to
30fps at 640x480 with most graphics options on.  I've got 64MB RAM, 12MB
Voodoo2 1000 PCI video card, and DirectX 7.0a.  N3 will run fine on your
system if you have a Voodoo2 and enough RAM.  Actually, I was running N3 up
to last week with a 4MB Voodoo1 and getting 18-22 fps with most graphics
options on.  But the V2 makes a big difference.

Sorry... didn't know it would be needed. Anyway, here 'tis:

CPU: P233MMX underclocked to 225 but bussed up to 66mhz. (As I recall.
Anyway, it benchmarked higher that way.)
MB: P51430TX Titanium IB
RAM: 32Meg of SDRAM
Vid card: Virge S3 w/4 meg
Sound Card: SB AWE64
Drivers: Unknown, no DX installed, NR99 is run thru a DOS reboot.

I'm not very computer literate... and would be open to any suggestions
on how to optimize the above for N3 with a low $$ investment.

Thanks for your interest.
