I just fired up the game for the first time, and am having trouble
seeing the cars.  Is this something I have to live with, or is there
some sort of adjustment I can make to make either, a) the cars brighter,
or b) the track lighter?

For our benefit could you clarify if you purchased Cart Precision
Racing(CPR) by Microsoft or CART RACING(CR) by Papyrus.
I'm guessing you have CPR and yes the cars are hard to see.  There is a
patch that you should definately get.  Besides a host of drivability issues,
I think there is a gamma slider in there too.  That might help

I tried the demo and those cars are damn hard to see!  The patch for
Cart Precision Racing fixes this, I believe there is a slider to adjust
the car/track brightness.  Speaking of vision impairment, without the
patch you'll know why the law deosn't visually impaired persons like
myself to drive, you see the car ahead of you a split second before you
hit it! (and in the case of CPR, the other car is going so much slower
than yourself there is not much you can do to avoid it!)

Wrong. It is well known by CPR users that if you want the AI cars to go
faster, you just edit the system.ini. Takes about 2 secs.

Wrong indeed, and missing the real problem which is of course the
difficulty in sustaining an interest in CPR beyond those two seconds.

;-)

Cheers!
