You want Free Agent - and yes it is free! It is a superb program,
offline reading and posting, nice user interface, multithreaded (i.e.,
communication takes place in the background - you can look at one
newsgroups message while downloading another one). And it makes short
work of up/downloading of binary files to/from the newsgroups - you
just specify an attachment, as easy as in a mail program, and it posts
it (along with you message), automatically breaking it up into
seperate files as message length requires. Same on downloads - it does
all the hard stuff (combining of messages into files) for you.
There is also a professional version, but the free version meets all
my needs so I haven't yet bought it (but I plan on it, the program is
worth it). It runs fine on Win95. I don't have the Web address of
where I got it, but I remember I found it easily by searching for
"windows newsreader free agent" on a web search form.
I do remember the zip file seemed quite small for a Windows app - it
was about 750K bytes I think. But it is a full-featured as any windows
app, better than many. And now that I think of it, I think the whole
program was a single EXE file, no DLLs or anything. I wonder if maybe
it's a Delphi app?
