On a returned CPU, how can Intel tell the difference between a retail chip
and an OEM ?

I would assume by the cpu id # .  And don't all intel retail cpu's leave
the
factory with an installed heatsink?  I'm not sure about oem...but even the
brand
of fan would be a tip-off.

If I ain't mistaken this with some other company, all Intel CPU's have a
Stepping Number.  Some steppings are set asside as retail chips, others as
OEM Chips, thats how Intel knows.  If you bought your computer, chances are
it is an oem chip.

If you have the motherboard manual, or can find it online,
it may well have pictures/descriptions of the differences
between the retail and OEM versions of the CPU. My
Gigabyte manual (My machine was OEM so i didnt get
a m/b manual and had to download it) has photos of my
PII cpu in both forms, with instructions for any differences
there may be in fitting them. On the PII there are major
differences between the heatink/fan setups.
