sims out there..that still let you go all over the landscape over a
relatively large area like the good old Test Drive 3 did?  I remember boonie
jumping in an Corvette CERV II ... stupid fun, but fun none the less.
Anybody know of a sim that would let you do this?

Rally Championship has a pretty vast landscape to roam around on. Sure, some
places are lined with fence or buildings but the majority of it is wide open
wilderness as the treelines are quite setback in many places. There are
bumps to jump, drop offs to desend and creaks to crash through..it even has
some places where you can follow a completly diffent road that will loop you
around and you'll pop out someplace else on the course.

Hmm.. yeah but of what I think he means is kinda like how you can just go wild
in he towns and forests like in Carmageddon 2.  Now that's freedom.

Well AMA Superbike you can do that once you get tired of trouncing the AI.  Its
not really meant to be that way but its fun none the less when you feel like
taking a Ducati 996 over pedestrian bridges :)

Other than that try like Carmageddon (as suggested) or maybe Driver or Midtown
Maddness (more race oriented but still essentially the same thing)

Motocross madness had very large areas similar to desert landscapes that
offered heaps of freedom for non restrictive stupid fun :)
Not so much a sim but nither was test drive 3.

"Powerslide" sounds like what you're looking for, considering it has the
catch-cry "Make your own damn road"
Part of its fun is to explore and find secret locations. The first game from
www.ratbaggames.com who then released Dirt Track Racing.

Boonie jumping, landscape drivin', car blowing up stupid fun is what Interstate
'76 was made for! :-D  It even has headlights the work, but I don't think you
can call it a "sim".  The driving physics are adequate though.

There was 1 map we used for road racing in which you had 2 boonie jumps :-)
Forget the name of the map though.

Aside: I never did start that clean I'82 drivers club ;-P  I heard I'82 didn't
have the same feel as I'76 anyway.

Jason.

Monster Truck Madness 2 and Insane are exactly what you are looking for.You
can actually drive all the way around the world in MTM2. Start at point A
and drive in a straight line and eventually you come back to where you
started. There are no restrictions in this game . Go ANYWHERE. An upcoming
title that sounds like what you are looking for is Insane from Codemasters.
Check it out here.

I think you found the best software for him.  Interstate 76 is clearly the
best one for off-road stunts.  There is some incredibly wide areas, with
miles of hills and canyons.  There isn't anything as fun as trying to jump
over canyons with them Mustangs.  I recommend it.  Remember, not
Insterstate'82,  76 is the good one! ;)

It's not a sim, but Big Red Racing (can you still get that? It's a
load of fun) has that feature - there's a race on Mars in a hoverbike-
type-thing as part of the game, and I never used to bother with the
race. I just went off cross-country doing huge yumps!

If you do it right, you can do it in GPL to a small extent...

One time, coming out of Flugplatz at the Ring, I landed, bounced, slid some,
and then just cleared the fence to the right!!!  Just plain cleared it!!!
Drove around on that big old grass field with my Eagle for a while :)
