This probably won't help you much, but I've downloaded the "official"
3Dfx version of X Car, and I don't get any popping sounds. I'm running
the newest drivers for my SB32. I *have* heard a few random musical
tones here and there, but there's no pattern to them, nor do they seem
to be replacing another sound in the game.
One thing I've noticed is a definite "stepping" of the engine sound as
you throttle up and down...it sounds okay at mid-band, but when you get
off the throttle and pop the gas back in there's a real sudden jump to
the volume of the engine sound.
