TEN OFFICALLY dies October 14

Posted from TEN:

Howdy Racers,

On October 14, 1999, TEN will officially shut down the
pay-for-play game service.  It was a tough decision, but
we have decided to shift our focus from retail and pay-to-
play titles to free family games.

In addition, all TEN local access numbers will be disabled
as of today, September 7, 1999, but you will still be able
to connect to TEN using your own ISP. All TEN e-mail
accounts and newsgroups will be active until December
31, 1999.

Those of you that have already paid subscription fees for
any service after September 1, 1999 will be refunded for
this amount. This refund will be credited to your credit
card by the end of September. No one will be billed for
TEN service from here on out--from now until the
shutdown date, all active TEN subscribers can race on
TEN for free.

The past couple of years of NASCAR Racing on TEN has
been wonderful, and we were glad to be able to host it
during this time. We thank you all for your support and
wish you continued fun and success in future racing
endeavors.

Details on Billing Credits

No one will be billed any TEN subscription fee after
9/1/99. In addition, if you have paid for any subscription
service after 9/1/99, you will be refunded this amount.

Example 1, if you have a monthly flat account and your
last billing date was August 15, 1999, you will be
refunded $10.05 for the 15 days in September that you
would have been billed past September 1 ($0.67 per
day).

Example 2, if you have a bulk rate account and your last
billing date was July 5, 1999, you will be refunded $15.40
for the 35 days that you would have been billed past
September 1 ($0.44 per day).

Example 3, if you have a hourly account and your last
billing date was August 7, 1999, you will be refunded
$2.31 for the 7 days that you would have been billed past
September 1 ($0.33 per day).

Hmm. I thought online was the 'future' of racing games and
that Nascar3 would surely fail if it didn't have great MP.

That's what one of the TEN people said here, a day or
two ago.

It looks like he was wrong.

A large majority of us anticipated TEN dropping its premium service.  It
was no surprise.  Just because TEN is out of the picture does not mean
that N3 or future releases will not be on a centralized system.

Online is definitely the future of racing games (simulations).

But, Scott, you don't REALLY believe that N3 will be a failure
if it doesn't have great MP, do you?

That's what the TEN guy said earlier.

Also, if MP is such a requirement for goodness, I wonder
why TEN had to close up shop? Do you know?

Well lets hope AMA SuperBike and Nascar3 can pick up where TEN left off.:)

The "realistic expectations" was my original thread.  I want to clear up what
I was trying to get across.

1) I do not have any association with TEN or have an account with them.
2) This is why the multiplayer was important to "me" because with another
Sierra product (Half-Life) its the multiplayer capability that blows the
single player away.
3) If Sierra can give N3 the same multiplayer support/capability I feel that
it would truly place it in a category head and shoulders above other racing
games.
4) I am truly sorry for lurking for 4 years on this board to finally post
something and have it evolve into this fiasco.

To stick to the subject of this thread:  Has anyone heard "why" TEN is being
shut down?  Its obviously not just NROS but all of the pay-to-play services.
With games like Half-Life (1st person shooter) which is over a year old and
has free server capability.  The number of online servers and players keep
climbing; its hard to justify paying for online ***.

No problem. I am very much looking forward to a 9/15/99 release.  I am also very
glad that the game has so much support out there for carsets, tracks, sounds,
setups, and helpful software.  We probably get equal (if not more) value from the
support and add-ons provided by the end users.

ex:  The Pits, IWWCARS, etc.

: 2) This is why the multiplayer was important to "me" because with another

: single player away.

Actually, a lot of people (myself included) found multi-player in
Half-Life rather pointless in the context of the game concept (why are
scientists trying to kill each other).  The single player game was more
satisfying.  Of course, once it evolved into Team Fortress, then it made
sense.  Multiplayer is not the be all and end all for a lot of people,
especially when the offline game is as brilliant as, for example,
Half-Life or GPL.

: To stick to the subject of this thread:  Has anyone heard "why" TEN is being

This point seems obvious, and I'm surprised the others equate the loss of
TEN to the loss of interest in multiplayer.  Yes, people will have to go
out and buy N3 to take advantage of free MP, but that's the same cost as a
few months of online racing.  However, unless people make the effort to
organize league races, it's going to be an unsatisfying experience.

Sierra doesn't write any games. They are merely publishers for small
programming houses.  Papy didn't write Half-Life, so they don't have
access to that code.

It's sad to think you spent two years building rankings.

I assume you will still have  your skill (ability) and reputation where ever
we happen to race again.

This is really sad to those of us who have spent two years of our lives
building skill, rankings, and reputations in preperation for the promised
NROS sanctioned seasons.

I knew it was too good to be true.  This sucks...
