N2003 "GPL mod"...possible?

by will » Wed, 02 Jul 2003 03:50:40

Was wondering about how mod friendly N2003 is.
And thus what we might possibly expect in the future.
Keeping an eye on project wildfire but since that's going from 'non
rigid body' to i guess even less rigid body trucks......i don't think
i'll be all that keen on it.
What i'd like to see is GPL, or more to the point 'true' racing cars
from early F1 seasons,  with the 2003 physics.
Anyone an idea as to if this could be done...or doesn't N2003 allow
that much modding freedom?

Yes. Try a google search on project wildfire.

Project wildfire is using physics that are actually already part of
the N2003 executable and are being unlocked by the upcoming patch.

A GPL mod (or Aussie v8 mod, champcar mod, etc) would require someone
to actually find and modify the physics parameters in the .exe.

Which makes me wonder what we'll actually use those AussieV8 and T/A
shapes we posted pics of, unless......

PWF's current mods all deal with either trucks or the Busch cars for NR2003.
We do have more coming in the future but we are not ready to go into that
yet.  However I kind of wonder why you want a GPL mod for NR2003, when there
is already a GPL?  I expect you'll probably have more interest in our next
project, but dont write off the trucks until  you try them, they are a blast
to drive.  I think the CTS thread on the sierra boards already has more
replys, then GPL sold copies :)   ( That last comment was intended as humor,
I mean to take nothing away from a quality title like GPL )

Not to mention that structurally, NASCAR cars are far away from GPL-era or
historical F1's. Can NR2003 model non-Clutchless ***, 5+ gear gearboxes,
a very different suspension geometry, tyre model, spring rate/damper values,
etc...  There is some very crude technology making those stock-cars go
'round in real life.

I don't know (or perhaps they do but I haven't read about it) if NR2003 can
be modified for such extent.  Perhaps it was on purpose not made so during
development.

Unless Papy added some V8 supercar physics to the kernel. =)

Different year.
Different cars.
Different tracks.

Or even if you used 1967, better physics.  A real tire model,
pitstops, full f1 rules, etc.  Would be incredibly awesome, plus the
vastly superior rendering, sound and ffeedback engine in n2003.

Well, same reasons as the other replier.
GPL was good in it's days, it still is king of sims in sortof a
way..but not because of physics accuracy. It's more that GPL still
holds something which other sims still haven't captured for me.
The closest right now i get to the GPL feeling with is the GT2002
mod...although physics are not as good as N2003 it has that certain
something which N2003 doesn't have...at least for me. And after
thinking about that i figured it's probably  the cars i don't like in
2003. I'm sure they're pretty accurate in 2003  but i guess i wouldn't
like driving a nascar monster in real life either..
To be honest i really don't care much if a future 2003 mod is a 67
mod...or a 76 mod or an indy mod or even a GT mod ...as long as the
cars which one can drive have a more rigid chassis, far less body
roll...etc..etc...
Hence....race cars...not a cannon ball on steroids like the nascars...
That's why i was curious as to how far N2003 modding could be taken.
Looking forward to wildfire's mods...great to see so much dedication
and hard work just to enjoy the race maniacs:).
