NASCAR Racing difficulities with my T1

by dsamp.. » Thu, 24 Nov 1994 03:53:18

As the subject line says, I have NASCAR Racing and a T1 wheel.  I've run into some peculiar behaviour and
want to know if anyone else is seeing this.

When I calibrate the wheel via joysticks 1 & 2, the values aren't saved.  I can calibrate, go test on a track, return
to calibrate, and the values are all hosed.  I've also noticed that after calibration, the car can't drive a
straight line (i.e. on pit road).  It pulls badly to one side or the other, indicating that the wheel isn't really calibrated.

I can now tell when this is going to happen.  When calibrating the T1, the center offset marker for the joystick
rarely is stable.  It either jumps around or there are TWO of them, one at each end of the axis.  If I see this I
know the steering will be screwed.  About every 5th time, I'll get one offset marker and it will be stable near the
center of the line.  In those cases, the steering handles properly but the calibration doesn't seem to be retained
if I return to the Controls/Calibrate area.  It is not a question of linear steering.  That is turned on.  There appears
to be a problem with the actual calibration routines.

One thing I haven't tried is a vanilla boot.  I have a 33MHz 486 with 8M memory and I'm running QEMM.  I seem
to recall that NASCAR has its own memory extender.  I'll turn off QEMM and see if the situation is improved.  But,
I don't recall this being a problem with Indy Car Racing, so I'm doubtful that that is the problem here.
