Braking Help in GPL Please!

by terminato » Mon, 22 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I consider myself a good N1999 driver but I am having a hard time w/ GPL.
My main problem is braking. I can't get it down.
When I try to go easy on the pedal I normally overshoot and when I brake
hard I loose control.
I can 'feel' the throttle and steer with it and all that but getting in to
the corner is killing me.
I have tried following the AI (lol) when possible to help me learn, but
their braking points are much deeper than I can manage.

How important is setting the brake bias?
How important are setups in general?
I mean shouldn't I at least get consistent, almost competetive laps before I
worry about tweaking these cars?

Should I slide the car into the corner or try to make it stick?

Or????????

TIA for any help.

First, pick a course you've got plenty of laps in and like and then practice
for a couple of hours, it'll take a while.  Don't overlook downshifting while
braking, it helps a lot.  Due to the high degree of physics modeling in this
sim, track irregularities play a big part in braking,ie: road crown, dips or
bumps  and weight transfer cannot be overlooked.  At the end of the first Glen
straight the car gets light going over the brow of the hill so you'll lock more
easily if you're still braking!

begin to lock and avoid having the rear swing around under braking  as often as
default does.

No!  Some of the default setups are miserable!  First, dump some fuel.  Softer
settings for more grip.  Lower ride height for more grip.  go easy and one
setting at atime.

Brabhams like going "slideways" but not under braking.  Ferrari's natural state
is sliding under power!  Hehe  But generally try to avoid tire squeal til
you've got GPL pretty well grooved.

No.1 GPL rule:  Practice.

I use the beginning of the dark patch to start my braking as a guide........I
use a joystick and have just learned from other posts that even with my braking
and throttle help off,it still remains on.
This is very frustrating when trying to attempt a good lap time.
Try finding out your release speed to drift thru the corner and see if that
helps you gain a better feel as a good starting point to tweking your judgement
as you learn the track and it's difference nuance's.Once you get that feel
down, depending what car you drive,it really helps you gain more confidence as
you put more and more laps of training into each track and section so that when
you do feel you are ready to "go for it",even at top speed you can still make a
split second recovery.
This sim is like no other I bet you have ever tried before.Dont get too
frustrated and keep practicing. The rewards it brings when you finally get into a
race knowing that you know the track, your car and it's limits and you can
compete at a fairly competitive level, are very satisfying indeed. What a great
sim!!!!

Same can be said about Nascar2 or 1999 too.Just another form of racing to be
enjoyed.By the way,nascar3 will be using this same engine model for it's game
engine as well so that should be very very interesting to see what happens when
it's replicated for that formula.
now if I can JUST get my joystick to behave without any of this braking and
throttle help.....heh heh
enjoy!!

Actually, the helps only remain on if you use keyboard keys or joystick buttons for
throttle/braking. If you use an analog axis for throttle or brake, the helps will
turn off.

Braking is very important to do consistently. I'm no ace by any means,
but try to get around the courses consistently.

To optimize my braking I did 2 things. First was to split the throttle
and brake axis on my T1. Before I had a separate brake axis it was very
difficult to prevent the rear end of the car from swinging around in
some turns. For example the Loop entry after the front straight was just
a nightmare. The car comes down and smacks the springs and is a little
unpredictable. Using a split axis makes it easier to correct the cars
turn into the corner by using the throttle to steer while still braking.
More control means later braking entry into corners.

The second way to optimize braking is to put a stop under the brake
pedal. For example if a brake pedal goes from 5 (off) to 40 (full on)
under calibration, then put a stop(piece of wood or a bolt etc) under
the pedal to stop it at 36 or so(after calibrating to 40). This prevents
full 4 wheel lock and as a result, unpredictable braking. I like to set
mine where the tires will lock when cold but tend to still roll under
full braking once warmed up.

These two steps have helped my consistency and enjoyment of GPL.
Getting consistently fast is best left to someone else to tell.

If I understood correctly, you made modifications to your T1 to have the
brake and throttle pedals on different axis?

What did you do? Has anybody done this modification to Thrustmaster GP1 wheel?

Hey Roy... great braking stop suggestion! I think I'll try it!

If you mean splitting the paddles to separate axes, then no, I don't
think it can be done.  The paddles share one potentiometer don't they?
You have to have two pots in order to split it.

If they do use two, it's a matter adding the wiring to split output
from the pots to the correct connector pins.  Do a search for "joystick
port
pinout" and it's easy to figure out.

Although I agree with this being a good solution to prevent lockups, it
will have a disadvantage as soon as you become faster.
When your wheels do not lockup at low speeds at the maximum braking you
can apply, you will come short on the max braking force when at high speed.
Meaning, at high speed you can apply *more* brake before locking up.

It uses two...

...and I think I managed to make my GP1 into a three axle wheel... :-)

According to a joystick test program my TM GP1 now has steering on X1 axis,
gas on Y1 axis and brake is on Y2 axis. It was quite easy once I figured it
all out. I havent tested it yet with any games and I am very tired so I guess
I will have to leave it until tomorrow. (I also have to take a sound card
from my Linux machine to my Grand Prix Legends-machine. I managed to somehow
fry the game port integrated to the motherboard (sounds still work) which is
not as bad as it sound, because the integrated game port seemed to cause a lot
more jitter than the game port in my Soundblaster 16 VE... ;-)

OH YES! It works great! And I even got rid of those *** handshakes, thanks
to the better game port (it is sometimes useful to break things ;-).

No I just have to learn the new tricks with braking while accelerating ;-)
